Remembering that Stones Concert is for SARS

Today one of those health care workers who ended up dying because of nursing others was laid to rest.  Toronto nurses and doctors have died as part of the SARS epidemic and had incredibly stressful jobs over the past few months.  The Concert is called SARS - stock after Woodstock. Although I hate the name it is to remind us of what we have truly gone through in this city and country because of this illness.

Quote:
Toronto said a final goodbye to our second nurse to succumb to S.A.R.S. on Tuesday.

A private funeral was held for 58-year-old Tecla Lin, who passed away 10 days ago from severe acute respiratory syndrome. Experts think she became infected during the first outbreak of the ailment while she cared for sickened health-care workers.

“It’s a very sad day and reminds all of us of the huge sacrifices that were made by health care workers during S.A.R.S. and the great risks that they were exposed to,” said Dr. James Young, the Commissioner Of Public Security.

Councillor Olivia Chow agreed. “Some have given their lives and their family’s life,” she said, explaining that Lin’s husband also died of the disease after contracting it from her.

Lin’s casket was saluted by an honour guard at a Buddhist ceremony that was attended by family, friends and medical experts from the S.A.R.S. containment team. And during a eulogy, Doris Grinspun, head of the Ontario Registered Nurses Association, spoke of the nurse as a modern day Florence Nightingale.

“She will live forever in our hearts,” said China’s Consul General Chen Xiaoling.

Toronto's S.A.R.S. death toll has retroactively risen to 42. Health officials have revealed the disease claimed the life of a 59-year-old man, who died May 20th.

The Stones are being paid for their Wednesday performance. But 50 per cent of what they make off merchandise sold at the show will go to the Toronto S.A.R.S. relief fund set up to help health care workers and the hospitality industry.

The concert was wonderful addams!  I caught part of it last night on TV - but OMG - I would not have wanted to be in that humongous crowd.

It will be exciting when the $ amount is disclosed that will go towards SARS.

The TV coverage, unfortunately, sucked everywhere.  I didn't watch it on TV, but I've heard that most stations didn't have the ability to broadcast entire songs, they could only play snippets, except for the CBC, which could play one song per artist, or something stupid like that.  I think they broadcast most of the Stones set.  I know several people who wanted to avoid the huge rush leaving the show at the end, so they left early to go home and catch the rest on TV, and were horribly disappointed at the lack of coverage.  Especially because so many TV stations were hyping up their coverage for a week beforehand.  Muchmoremusic were saying they were broadcasting the concert all day, but it turned out they could only play a few minutes per hour of live feed.  A little disappointing, in my opinion.

I havent heard yet how the direct feed went over in Calgary...I know they had it set up at the Saddledome and sold tickets to support the beef industry...there was talk of Edmonton doing the same - but our stupid stupid mayor (man he's almost as bad as cretien!) backed out.

Hey!  Has the dollar figure yet been announced - the amount that will benefit SARS?

The only number I heard was that based on credit card receipts there was 75 million dollars injected into the Toronto economy because of the concert and also the Caribana festival that same week.  Notably a 60 percent increase in restaurant sales.  Cool  Cool  Cool

I just am suddenly seeing people at the hotel across the street again.  Noticeably more people and also at City Hall where there are usually lots of folks.  I am also seeing Tour Buses - in the past I took those for granted.  Not any more.   Kiss
