No SEX for Singapore's drivers as government censors number plates

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Singaporean drivers have missed their chance to have S-E-X on the roads after the famously strait-laced government here stepped in to stop car license plates from forming "objectionable words", officials have confirmed.  
 
Most cars in Singapore carry a three-letter prefix starting with "S" followed by four numerical digits. The "SD" series ended last month and it should have gone on to the "SE" series - from SEA all the way to SEZ.  
 
 
But a Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesperson told AFP it had skipped "SE" and gone straight to "SF" so that SEX would be kept off the roads.  
 
 
"Last year, LTA decided not to implement the "SE-" index series and those with vowels in the middle letter of three-letter prefixes to avoid the possibility of having words in the prefix that motorists may find objectionable," the spokesperson said.  
 
 
The letters "O" and "I" were also removed from the prefixes of vehicle registration numbers to avoid confusion with the numbers "0" and "1".  
 
 
Car owners currently have little choice over their registration plates, which are automatically assigned.  
 
 
But the government, which has attempted recently to allow Singaporeans to be more adventurous with bar-top dancing and bungee jumping, indicated it was may also be willing to loosen up on the number plate restrictions.  
 
 
"We are mindful that some people may want different kinds of vehicle registration numbers," the spokesperson, indicating there could be some changes when a new licensing system is introduced in 2006.

and did you think that was a good thing azure?
 
I can never forget the vehicles that have lights on top that flash if the driver speeds.  Only in dear old Singapore.  I tell though, that country is really clean and a pleasant place to visit.
