Philippine soldiers, police arrest deadly mall bombing suspects

Tuesday, August 05, 2003

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Police and army intelligence agents on Tuesday captured two suspects in a Manila mall bombing that killed one and wounded 11 others three years ago, the police said.

The bombing was allegedly a "dry-run" for the near simultaneous blasts on Dec. 30, 2000 in metropolitan Manila that killed 22 people and injured more than 100, said Eduardo Matillano, chief of the national police's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. Dante Ambo, 37, and Danny Boisan, 32, were arrested in Maharlika Village, a Muslim-dominated community in suburban Taguig early Tuesday. They were charged with murder and illegal possession of explosives, Matillano said.

Matillano said police recovered a grenade, two homemade bombs, detonating cords and blasting caps during the arrests.

Boisan told reporters when the suspects were presented to the media that a commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front - a Muslim separatist group - paid him and Ambo 100,000 pesos ($1,830 US) each to carry out the mall bombing. The commander, Nabil Panayaman, is still at large.

The MILF has denied involvement in the May 21, 2000 explosion in a women's restroom of Manila's largest shopping mall, SM Megamall.

The explosion was the second that week, coming four days after a powerful blast at the Glorietta Mall in the financial district of Makati injured 13 people.

Matillano alleged that the two men were accomplices of Fathur Rohman Al-Ghozi, a self-confessed member of the Islamic extremist group Jemaah Islamiyah who said he was involved in the December 2000 bombings.

Al-Ghozi was arrested in 2002 and sentenced to up to 12 years for illegally possessing explosives. He escaped from a maximum security prison last month before he was to be arraigned on murder charges for the Dec. 30, 2000 bombings.

Matillano said Boisan and Ambo taped the bomb components to their bodies and smuggled them into the mall's movie theatre, where they reassembled the explosive and slipped it into the restroom. The blast killed a janitor.

Police blamed the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front for the mall bombings. The rebels, who denied involvement, earlier warned of retaliation for a military offensive that eventually drove them out of their stronghold, Camp Abubakar, on southern Mindanao island.

The mall bombings came after a series of deadly blasts that hit the south earlier that year, including one that killed 40 people on a ferry in Ozamis City in February 2000.
