Well this is the most amazing good news I have ever known.  A mother arrived at hospital not knowing she had an abdominal pregnancy.  All the ultrasounds did not pick it up.  when they did the caesarean the doctor fortunately recognized it immediately.  One in a million abdominal pregnancies have a healthy baby result.  Here's this incredible good news story as I found it at http://www.canada.com/national/story.asp?id=7FFEFE52-13EA-47D4-81F5-B82AD8D5CF58www.nationalpost.com

'Miracle baby' survives rare abdominal pregnancy
One in a million cases of risky condition is carried to term

Montreal's 'miracle baby' was a rare example of abdominal pregnancy, in which the fetus grows inside the mother's abdominal cavity rather than the uterus. The baby was delivered by caesarean section.

MONTREAL -- His name, for now, is miracle baby.

The infant is an extremely rare case of a successful birth after having grown inside his mother's abdomen for 37 weeks, not inside the uterus.

Swaddled in a powder blue blanket, the healthy baby boy and his mother met the media yesterday at Montreal's Sacré-Coeur Hospital.

"He's my miracle baby," said the soft-spoken mother, who was still weak from undergoing an emergency caesarean birth on Aug. 6.

The baby weighed five pounds, 12 ounces, and was born in excellent condition, said a beaming Dr. Robert Sabbah, the hospital's chief of obstetrics.

The positioning of the fetus outside the uterus occurs in one of 10,000 pregnancies. Fewer than one in a million of these cases is carried successfully to term.

Dr. Sabbah said in this case, the key to survival was the location of the placenta next to and on top of the uterine cavity. This enabled good blood circulation and allowed the placenta to nourish the fetus.

"The baby was sitting on the uterus, using the uterus as a seat and the placenta was under his bum. The head was near the liver," Dr. Sabbah said.

The mother, who hopes to leave hospital this week, said the whole experience was "very painful."

"I knew I was going to have a caesarean, but I didn't know it would be that difficult," she told reporters. "I am very happy to be alive so I can take care of my baby."

The health care team also managed to save the uterus and she can have more children, although the mother said yesterday that this child, her second, would be her last.

The woman was described by Dr. Sabbah as a visitor to Canada. Invoking patient confidentiality, she asked not to be photographed and her name and nationality not be specified.

Dr. Sabbah said she arrived at the hospital on the morning of Aug. 6 complaining of acute abdominal pain and bleeding.

Ultrasound images from her home country and here did not reveal that the fetus was growing inside the abdominal cavity, Dr. Sabbah said.

"To my great surprise during surgery, I did notice that the baby was in the abdominal cavity and not in the uterus," he said. "I felt feet and right away I said, 'abdominal pregnancy' and I took out the baby as fast as I could."

Canadian satellite heads into space
Last Updated Tue, 12 Aug 2003 22:49:08
VANDENBERG AFB, CALIFORNIA - For the first time in more than 30 years Canada has sent one of its own scientific satellites into space.

Courtesy: Canadian Space Agency

The satellite known as SCISAT-1, the acronym for the Canadian Space Agency's Scientific Satellite Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment, will help scientists examine damage to the ozone layer and maybe help them figure out how to reverse the damage done.

The launch of SCISAT-1 was flawless. Just off the coast of southern California a Pegasus rocket was released from a jetliner. The rocket blasted into space, placing SCISAT-1 into orbit.

It will streak around the earth 15 times per day. Each time it orbits it will gaze into the sunrise and sunset, using the sun like a lamp, to illuminate the composition of the atmosphere.
