MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Some 30 dead dolphins have washed on up on Mexico's northwestern coast but the cause of their death is so far unknown, government environmental protection agency (news - web sites) Profepa said on Friday.

Locals first spotted several dead dolphins on Tuesday in the tourist town of Bahia de los Angeles on the shores of the Gulf of Baja California, 200 miles south of the U.S-Mexican border, Profepa said.

Up to 32 dolphins washed up around the town's shoreline during the week, witnessed said.

"This is the first time we have ever had so many dolphins dying and washing up on these shores," Profepa spokesman Manuel Gallardo said.

Gallardo said pollution in the water could have caused the deaths, but declined to give further details, saying an investigation was under way.
