Priest in abuse scandal killed in prison
Geoghan serving sentence for molesting boy in 1991
Saturday, August 23, 2003 Posted: 4:50 PM EDT (2050 GMT)

(CNN/AP) -- John Geoghan, a defrocked Roman Catholic priest and convicted child molester, has been killed in prison, a Massachusetts public safety spokesman told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Geoghan was injured during an incident with another inmate about noon and died shortly after being taken to Leominster Hospital, Department Of Public Safety spokesman David Shaw said.

The other inmate had been isolated and the incident is being investigated, the AP reported.

Geoghan became a central figure in the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal. He was found guilty in January 2002 of molesting a boy in a swimming pool a decade earlier and sentenced to nine to 10 years in prison.

More than 130 people have accused him of sexual abuse during his 30-year career in six parishes. Geoghan was defrocked in 1998.

The Catholic Church paid millions of dollars from civil suits filed in connection with Geoghan. The church is still dealing with a settlement for others who say they were abused.

Earlier this month, a group rejected a settlement offer of $55 million from the Boston Archdiocese.

The 2002 verdict pertained only to one case, in which he was charged with indecent assault and battery against a 10-year-old boy. The boy was a college student when he testified that Geoghan reached under his swimming suit and grabbed his buttocks while the two were in a pool at the Waltham Boys and Girls Club in 1991.

Geoghan's defense was that he touched the boy only to help him out of the pool.

A psychiatrist testified that Geoghan acknowledged having sexual fantasies about children.

"We discussed his ability to control his sexual fantasies and his sexual feelings about women and boys," testified Dr. Edward Messner, a Boston-based psychiatrist who said he treated Geoghan between December 1994 and July 1996.

Also during the trial, jurors in Middlesex County Superior Court heard from Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes, who once oversaw the Boston area.

In 1991, Hughes testified, he forbade Geoghan from going to the swimming club after a friend of the boy's family complained to the church.

Hughes said he made that decision based on a report that Geoghan had been proselytizing at the pool there and had conversations that could be interpreted as "prurient."

I don't care what clothes he wears, what name he calls himself, or where he lives...no man that molests 130 children (or people for that matter) represents any god of mine.  This man is nothing but a common pedafile, and there's no sympathy in my heart for him.

Good I am NOT alone Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool This issue "abuse" not always sexual really hits me this week my oldest son admitted to me, my wife and his therpaist that his Mother (my ex) had pushed him down some stairs about two to three years ago. I onlywish he had something something sooner as most of you know my ex was verbally and mentally (with threats of physical) abusive for many years and like a fool I believed in vows good or bad you stick it out so we all endured many sad situations fortuantly to date I know fo no sexual abuse to any of the children but she is reason Michael (oldest) has problems and see a therpaist. Children refer to her as "Evil Mommy" and treat Pilar (my wife) as their true Mother and in many ways she is other than she didnt give birth to them.  Upon hearing this my first thoughts were I wish she was dead (the ex) I have gotten past that children are safe with me and Pilar and its our job to help them through their problems and we will! This man is also wrong and similar in some ways but yes i agree far worse in what he did and how many he did it to and like I said i feel no sorrow for him as if same were to happen to my ex I would feel no sorrow and for that I ask forgiveness

Cry  David!  You were following your marriage vows and everything they meant to you - which was final.  You woke up one day and decided an error was being commited and your children came first - about all else.

You made your decision and split from the witch with the children - for their safety.  You're in good standing with the Lord.

This priest which is topic of discussion - well, that's quite another situation.  Eh?

....as for the priest, I have no mixed feelings at all, 130 children.  What a tormented evil man!  Most of the time they get their just desserts in prison.  Other prisoners attack pedophiles, for this is a very wrong thing to them.  You can rob and murder, but to harm a child to most is cause for your end to come in prison.

For you and your family David, good luck, and keep up what you are doing.  Obviously you and your wife are on the right track with your young family.  I only hope for their sake, they do not see or talk with
 "evil mommy".

yeah, there have been a lot of mixed reactions here in the boston area.  the people i feel bad for are those involved in the cases that were still pending against him, for many have come forward to say they regret that they will never have their day in court to confront him.

oww... for this priest... well... like rhune said, he is just like any ordinary pedophile (and to make him worse, he's a priest) and pity he does not deserve...  but no one deserves to be killed.. except of course by the rule of human laws....

for you david... hope your son and other children could outgrow the harsh treatments they received from their mother... though its sad because, we tend to bring into our own children what was planted to us by our parents specially during the growing years....  i hope.. that your kids won't pass it down to your grandchildren... Our children trust grandparents, parents and their teachers.  These are the ones who have the most influence and affect on their young lives.  When this trust is gone, their innocence is destroyed for years, if not for life.

The inmate had nothing to loose by murdering this man, I refuse to call him a priest, he lost that title when he abused the first young boy!
