More news later but apparently this was due to "grid" problems that were experienced recently in the US.
 
Over 60% of their tubes are shut down.  All this came at the height of the evening rush hour.

Power went out in parts of London and in southeastern England Thursday, two weeks after New York and other parts of the Northeast were hit by a blackout.
 
 There were serious disruptions on the London Underground and on some train lines.  
 
Utility officials said the power appeared to be out in parts of south London and in Kent, which is southeast of the city.

Oh my goodness.  Exactly two weeks later.  The two events are not related though, I can't see how they could be. Other than the fact that it has been sooooooooo hot in england and europe this summer and there has been alot of pressure placed on the electrical grids everywhere.
