Facing jail, Australian pays 70,000 dollars in traffic fines

MELBOURNE, Australia (AFP) - A 24-year-old Australian man agreed in a Melbourne court to pay off more than 70,000 dollars (45,000 US) in traffic fines in order to avoid jail, officials said.

Joseph Nabil Abdelshahid appeared in a Melbourne court Friday facing up to 848 days in jail for non-payment of 295 traffic tickets involving fines of 70,597 dollars.

Some 220 of the tickets involved running tollway gates, while the rest were for speeding or parking violations.

Abdelshahid blamed a faulty electronic tollway tag account for the bulk of the fines and struck a deal under which he paid the court 15,000 dollars on Friday and agreed to pay another 15,000 dollars in 60 days.

The rest of the fines are to be paid in monthly installments of 400 dollars -- a process that will last eight years and four months.
