Between the cooler weather up here and the hurricane's system out in the Gulf - y'all were hit hard.

Four dead, 1 missing in Kansas flood
Sunday, August 31, 2003 Posted: 11:14 AM EDT (1514 GMT)

(CNN) -- Four people died and one was missing after heavy rains late Saturday swept a number of vehicles off Interstate 35 in southeast Kansas, an official said.

"A wave washed out a barrier wall," said Kansas Turnpike Authority dispatcher Dennis Stewart in Wichita. "We're still missing one person."

A 35-mile section of the highway was closed overnight between Cassoday and Emporia.

By Sunday morning, when the torrential rains eased to a light drizzle, one lane in each direction was reopened, he said. "It's still raining, nothing heavy."

According to the Associated Press, the storm that swept through Kansas dropped as much as 6 inches of rain on Topeka and Wichita. In Dodge City, in southwest Kansas, 4 to 7 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period. Several motorists had to be rescued from stranded vehicles.

"We've seen some of the vehicles floating down the road," Dodge City Police Sgt. Steven George told the AP.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch until 6 p.m. Sunday for several counties in central and eastern Kansas, the AP reported.

Yes ma'am, we're ok up here in KC so far.  Kansas City is a bit hilly and I live in one of the higher parts of town as well.  Every few years we get some flash flooding through here that unfotunatley kills a few people. Sad  So far none of it has been near where I live (section of town).  After the one they had about 6 years ago that killed 11 people, they made a lot of changes to the main trouble spots for draining and combatting flash flooding and that has really helped.

Great Rhune!  I imagined you and yours were ok but I just don't "trust" weather news 100%.  I'd rather hear about it from the horse's mouth.  :laff:

I had not even heard about this.  I also appreciate knowing that everyone is safe.  Living on a high spot is always a good idea.

I just saw the car that washed a mile in the rush of water on the news earlier.  So glad you were home safe.

Even though I've known for quite awhile where Rhune is, I'm still thrilled we have the "flags" locator here.  I've noticed not everyone is using it.

I keep my eye on the weather simply because I have so many family members and friends (including cyber) scattered all over concreation.  Another reason is that I don't always trust weather reports and I sure as heck don't trust Mother Nature.   Wink

Check out the tropical forecast, Mexico and the big island of Hawaii are being pelted with high winds and rain.  Hopefully, neither hurricane will go inland.
