Fish-Oil Fats May Stop Cancer Weight Loss
Fri Sep 12, 5:50 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Dietary supplements enriched in omega-3 fatty acids, a component of fish oil, may help cancer patients gain weight, new research suggests.

Weight loss and muscle deterioration are common problems for people with advanced cancer. In animal studies, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to protect against this problem, also known as cachexia.

The current findings, reported in the medical journal Gut, are based on a study of 200 patients with pancreatic cancer who received a diet supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids or a similar supplement lacking these fatty acids for 8 weeks. The subjects were instructed to consume two cans per day of the assigned supplement.

In the overall analysis, both supplements were equally effective in stopping the loss of body weight and muscle tissue, Dr. K. C. H. Fearon, from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the UK, and colleagues report.

However, on average, patients only consumed 1.4 cans per day of supplement--well below the recommended dose of 2 cans per day.

When the data was reanalyzed taking this into account, the authors found that as the amount of the omega-3 supplement consumed went up, so did weight and muscle gain. In contrast, this effect was not seen with the supplement lacking omega-3 fatty acids.

The team also found that only weight gain with the omega-3 supplement was actually tied to an improved quality of life.

Because many patients did not take the recommended daily amount of supplements, "further trials are required to examine the potential role of omega-3 enriched supplements in the treatment of cancer cachexia," the investigators conclude.

Wow - what an interesting and informative article.  To some, it might sound like a "simple fix" to consume this supplement and that it sounds like it's too good to be true.  However....

"The team also found that only weight gain with the omega-3 supplement was actually tied to an improved quality of life.

....if anything can be done to improve a cancer patient's life - this is beautiful.   We've all heard of the varying rigors of what chemo/radiation, etc., therapy and surgeries does to the body.  I'll bet some of the people used in this supplement study had a dickens of a time trying to swallow the first few bites.

"However, on average, patients only consumed 1.4 cans per day of supplement--well below the recommended dose of 2 cans per day.

It doesn't say and I wonder what size these "cans" were.  Standard size of a tuna can?

All in all - this is great news.

There are so many reasons to take fish oil on a daily basis. it is not that healthy for a healthy person to eat alot of salmon unless the source is understood.  Even wild salmon will have mercury in it (we have so destroyed our planet) but salmon oil pills have the mercury removed and according to Dr. Weil it is a safe source of fish oil.

I take one a day.  There are other sources of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and these are foods that everyshould eat as part of they healthy diet.

What a really helpful article and discovery.  I wonder what the mechanism of action is.

We eat a lot of salmon in my household, but it's all from farmed fish.

there have been health concerns raised about farmed salmon.  I don't know all of them, however, I still believe that children should not be fed salmon more then twice a week.

It is always difficult to separate facts from political interests in these matters.  In our household we try - but it's not always easy to figure out - to eat wild salmon.  I have tried to sneak salmon oil into other foods and when cooking.  It's flavour is so strong my daughter immediately rejects the food.  Sigh.

Here are a few articles.  They are not from scientific journals.  It appears that PCB's are one of the most significant concerns in farmed salmon.   This is separate from the ecological issues of farming salmon.

Here is an article that better explains why PCB's are high in farmed salmon and also the fact that PCB's take many years to break down in our bodies once we ingest them.

Here also is an article about the food colouring pellets that are fed to farmed fish

http://www.bluefish.org/artcolor.htm

There is nothing in this article suggesting whether the additives are harmful or not.
