George Plimpton, an actor, author and general enthusiast, has died at his home in New York city. He was 76.

Mr. Plimpton helped found the influential literary magazine The Paris Review and nurtured such writers as Philip Roth and Jack Kerouac. His own varied career saw him play football with the Detroit Lions, join the circus as a trapeze artist and take part in countless other "participatory" journalistic acts that became fodder for his books.

Mr. Plimpton also appeared on the screen, in small roles in such movies as Lawrence of Arabia and Good Will Hunting. On television, he showed up in several series, including ER and The Simpsons.

The Harvard-educated son of wealthy New Yorkers, Mr. Plimpton had friends in high society as well as politics, from Jackie Kennedy to George W. Bush.

Mr. Plimpton once wrote, "There are people who would perhaps call me a dilettante, because it looks as though I'm having too much fun. I have never been convinced there's anything inherently wrong in having fun.

"Senility Prayer"...God grant me...
The senility to forget the people I never liked
The good fortune to run into the ones that I do
And the eyesight to tell the difference."
