(CNN) -- Are Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez really splitsville -- or are they playing the news media like a Stradivarius?

According to reports in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Associated Press, the celebrity couple -- known as "Bennifer" (or, to some wags, "Affpez") -- was spotted Monday at the Liberty County Courthouse in the southeast Georgia town of Hinesville, about 30 miles from the coastal city of Savannah.

The sighting was just days after word arose that the duo's Southern California wedding, allegedly scheduled for the weekend of September 12, had been canceled and that the two had gone their separate ways.

Whether Lopez and Affleck were applying for a marriage or a gun license or simply completing some other paperwork was unknown despite rumors about the first two possibilities.

"There was some business conducted, but I am not at liberty to say what it was," Gretta Logan, senior deputy clerk of the Liberty County Probate Court, told the Journal-Constitution with an inadvertent pun. "What they were doing was their business."

The Liberty County sheriff said Affleck stopped by to ask about a gun permit, according to the AP, but court officials denied that report to the Journal-Constitution.

What was verified was that Affleck and Lopez did come to the courthouse (allegedly with Affleck's brother Casey), attracting paparazzi and cheerfully signing autographs.

Brooke Moran, a deputy registrar at the courthouse, told the Journal-Constitution that the pair "looked totally together, smiling and happy."

A Savannah radio station reported that the couple also had been sighted at a local shopping mall over the weekend. The couple recently purchased a multimillion-dollar estate on Georgia's Hampton Island.

So, is the love match back on? Only the couple -- and maybe their friends and relatives -- know. But if it is, and if it was never off, score one for the celebs for both maintaining a media frenzy and holding their relationship together.

We heard they were at the Courthouse for him to purchase a hunting license, maybe so, maybe no! Now who really cares?
They may be as interesting to the media as Gable and Lombard, for those of you who an remember or have heard about this couple.

Honestly yes her butt is big but I find her beauty for "REAL" than some of the prefab beauties out there now. I find J Lo's beauty "REAL" therfore I find it much more attractive than that of Pam Anderson etc. J Lo is just who she is nothing more nothing less and that only adds to her beauty In my eyes

Now the ring has returned to Jen's finger and director Kevin Smith, who is very close to the couple, told Access Hollywood that he believes the wedding will go on.

"I don't know, I mean first you got to get him to the altar before you can give him the manifesto or the manual on how to stay married," joked Smith. "He really does need the how to get married book."

Kevin hit the red carpet along with other notables at the "Kill Bill: Volume 1" premiere in Hollywood. Star Uma Thurman arrived with director Quentin Tarantino. Co-star Lucy Liu came armed with her new beau Zach Helm, while Daryl Hannah and Vivica A. Fox flew solo.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - A North Carolina woman wants Ben Affleck arrested.

Tara Ray of Kure Beach has accused the 31-year-old actor of threatening to hurt her in a warrant issued on Saturday (Oct. 4), according to the AP.

Ray claims that she has had a romantic relationship with Affleck since February 2002 and that the threats occurred on Sept. 25 when Affleck allegedly followed her as she drove home from Raleigh.

"I honestly believed my life was in danger," Ray said. "I'm not out for the publicity part. I just wanted it to be known in the public that he's very capable of doing this to me."

The police department said that it is not investigating Affleck.

Affleck, the focus of gossip for his rocky relationship with Jennifer Lopez, stars in John Woo's "Paycheck," which opens this Christmas.

Gwyneth tells Diane it took a good five years to get over him: "I was very upset for a long, long time. I'm so lucky that I spent time with Brad, somebody who was such a good person, especially when I was such a mess."

But her most recent heartbreak has been due to the death of her father, Bruce, who passed away last October. Gwyneth described her intense grief: "I had crazy things happen to me. I woke up a week or so after he died and all the muscles around my rib cage were in spasm. I couldn't breathe. There were some days where I thought, 'I can't believe I'm waking up, I can't believe I'm still alive.' The weight of the pain was so great, but you just keep waking up."
