LANDOVER, Maryland (AP) -- A 4-year-old boy who found a loaded gun in the house shot and killed his 5-year-old sister and seriously wounded his 7-year-old brother Saturday, police said.

The children were home alone at the time, police spokeswoman Cpl. Diane Richardson said.

"It's a terrible situation that probably could have been avoided," Richardson said.

Neighbors called police and the girl was taken to a hospital, where she died. Her 7-year-old brother was in critical condition at another hospital. Authorities said the parents were at one of the hospitals late Saturday, but it was unclear which one.

The 4-year-old boy was in police custody late Saturday, Richardson said.

"We're still trying to determine where the parents were," at the time of the shooting, she said.

Richardson said the parents could be charged for leaving small children unattended and for leaving the gun where the children could find it.

There is a woman who lives in a nearby town and killed her two daughter last Thursday, ages 3 and 6.
What will it take for this kind of horrible thing to stop!
What will it take for parents to not leave young children alone, let alone a gun they can reach!
Very sad!

Facing charges of leaving the kids alone and leaving a gun out?! how about child neglect? the child shouldnt be the one in police custody, the parents should be. I have a 6 year old who acts 15 but i would NEVER leave her alone at her age, much less with two younger children!    Angry Angry Angry Angry

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) -- A 2-year-old left alone for nearly three weeks while her mother was behind bars survived by eating mustard, ketchup, rice and raw pasta, police said.

The toddler was watching cartoons when found by her father, police said Monday. She was suffering from malnutrition and was being treated at Wolfson Children's Hospital, police said.

Dakeysha Lee, 22, was charged Monday with child abuse because she didn't let anyone know that her daughter was alone in her apartment, police said. She was jailed Sept. 10 on unrelated charges.

Ogden Lee, who is separated from the girl's mother, said he talked to her by telephone at the jail Sunday and she said their daughter was with neighbors.

When he got into the apartment, the youngster had dragged food and toys into her mother's bedroom and was lying in a baby's bathtub. She was covered with dried ketchup, Lee said.

"She grabbed me and wouldn't let go of me," Lee said. "It is really a miracle how good a shape my daughter is in. I don't know how she did it."

Unfortunately there are more than we even realize.  Some never get to jail or press.
The sad case of the two little girls, ages 3 and 6, has not been fully released as to how the Mother killed them.    A knife was found in the bathtub, but has not been ruled as a weapon at this time.
However, the officers who came to the scene are being treated by a phychiatrist.  The girls were nude and it must have been a very ugly sight.  This case happened in Plano, Texas last Thursday.

I'm almost scared to find out how she killed them.  So very very sad!  What in the world did they do to deserve to die  by their Mother's hand?  These children come into this world as a gift from God, why oh why aren't they treated with loving care?

Luci - is this the Plano story you've mentioned:

Plano mother held in deaths of her daughters

:CLIFF DESPRES , STAFF WRITER  09/29/2003

A Plano mother was charged with two counts of capital murder on Friday for the deaths of her two daughters, the city's first apparent homicides this year.

Lisa Diaz, 33, was arrested Thursday after her husband, Angel Diaz, called police that night when he found the couple's children, 6-year-old Briana Diaz and 3-year-old Kameron Diaz, dead in a bed in their home in the 1700 block of N Place in Plano.

She is being held without bail at the Collin County Jail in McKinney.

"We do not have a confession from her at this time," Manning said Friday. "I cannot get into the specifics of it, but there were statements made at the scene that indicated enough probable cause for us to go ahead and arrest her."

Officers found blood in the home, said police spokesperson Xavier Badillo, but investigators did not specify the girls' injuries. Police also declined to detail the events surrounding their deaths.

Neither a murder weapon nor a motive had been identified on Friday.

"We're not going to be able to discuss anything from the crime scene just yet," Manning said. "We're only a little more than 12 hours into this, and we're still putting a lot of stuff together."

Angel Diaz, the children's father, called police at 6:20 p.m. Thursday from the couple's East Plano home.

He told officers that he arrived home from work that night and met his wife in the garage, and she told him the children had been injured, police said. He then went inside the house and found the girls on a bed in a back bedroom. A tape of the 911 call indicated the children were bleeding and not breathing when they were found.

"I just know that there was blood and the children succumbed to injuries," Badillo said. "The father appeared, to me, pretty upset."

The Collin County Medical Examiner's Office had not revealed the children's cause of death as of 5 p.m. Friday. A search warrant affidavit had not been released by Collin County District Court No. 401 by 5 p.m.

Lisa Diaz, meanwhile, also suffered an injury on Thursday, and initial observations at the scene indicated that the wound could be self-inflicted, Manning said. Diaz was taken to the Medical Center of Plano and released early Friday morning.

She was then admitted to the Collin County Jail at 4:30 a.m. Friday.

"She's under close observation," said Sheriff's Lt. John Norton. "She cannot post bond, so we'll hold her until she's released by the courts."

The girls' deaths, if ruled homicides, would be the city's first homicides reported this year.

The Diaz family has lived in the house on N Place since 1999.

Rest of story in website addy above.   :cry2:

And to think of all the people in the world who can't have children but would love nothing more than to hold a baby of their own just once and who could and would love and care for a child. It's absolutely disgusting

Yes Wings, this si the story and obviously a very gruesome one.  All of it has not been released and I'm not sure I could read it if it is!
A child has nothing to rely on but it's parents and when the parents abuse and/or kill their own, it is sad beyond my comprehension.
