Limbaugh vs. McNabb

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Donovan McNabb isn't looking for an apology from Rush Limbaugh, who said he was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.

It's too late for that.

"He said what he said. ... I'm sure he's not the only one that feels that way but it's somewhat shocking to actually hear that on national TV," the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback said of Limbaugh at a news conference Wednesday. "An apology would do no good because he obviously thought about it before he said it."

Before McNabb led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 23-13 victory against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Limbaugh said on ESPN's pregame show that he didn't think McNabb was as good as perceived from the start.

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well," Limbaugh said. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

Limbaugh didn't back down from his comments during his syndicated radio talk show Wednesday.

"All this has become the tempest that it is because I must have been right about something," Limbaugh said. "If I wasn't right, there wouldn't be this cacophony of outrage that has sprung up in the sports writer community."

The NFL disclaimed any responsibility.

"ESPN knew what it was getting when they hired Rush Limbaugh," league vice president Joe Browne said. "ESPN selects its on-air talent, not the NFL."

Chris Berman, who anchors the ESPN show, described himself as "a New England Democrat" but added "I don't think Rush was malicious in intent or in tone."

"As cut and dry as it seems in print, I didn't think so when it went by my ears," he said. "I probably should have looked to soften it. We're sorry we upset a guy who got off to a rough start. We don't need to be in the middle of his travails.

I had to shake my head when I heard about Rush Limbaugh's comments on Donovan McNabb. You may have heard them by now, but if you haven't, Limbaugh said on ESPN's Sunday pre-game show that he didn't think the Eagles quarterback was as good as the media made him out to be.

"As the quarterback of the show, I feel bad about it. I don't think it was meant the way it came out. I don't think that defines the way Rush feels about people."

McNabb, who was runner-up for the league MVP award in 2000 and has led the Eagles to two straight NFC championship games, said he has no quarrel with Limbaugh's comment on his playing ability. "I know I played badly the first two games," he said Wednesday.

McNabb got off to the worst start of his career this season and was the NFL's lowest-rated starting quarterback after losses to Tampa Bay and New England. Still, the Eagles are 36-22 in games he started.

Limbaugh reiterated Wednesday that he doesn't think McNabb is a bad player, just that he isn't as good as some media members think he is.

"This is such a mountain out of a molehill," he said. "There's no racism here, there's no racist intent whatsoever."

McNabb said Wednesday that Limbaugh's comments about his race were out of bounds and added that someone on the show should have taken him on. Among the other panelists are former players Michael Irvin and Tom Jackson, both of whom are black.

"I'm not pointing at anyone but someone should have said it," McNabb said of the panelists, who also include Berman and Steve Young. "I wouldn't have cared if it was the cameraman."

Seven black quarterbacks started games last Sunday. Two other blacks who regularly start, Daunte Culpepper of Minnesota and Michael Vick of Atlanta, were out with injuries.

Although I am sure his comments were not meant to be racial they certainly came out that way and Rush should have thought it out much more before opening mouth and inserting foot! Regardless he did the right thing by resigning his comment weather meant to be offensive or not was and unprofessional! His resigning was the correct thing for him to do he doesnt really belong on a sports network anyhow he is a polictical Radio personality not a sports broadcaster. His hiring was as lame as MNF hiring Dennis Miller!

ESPN stated they knew what they could be "in for" when they took on Limbaugh.  They thought he would be smarter than he (again) proved himself to be.

Rush's Judgment: Time To Quit
In the wake of controversial statements regarding Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, Rush Limbaugh has resigned from his position as a member of ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown show.
• Calls for firing | McNabb on comments

PHILADELPHIA -- Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh said Thursday he resigned from ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown" pregame show to protect network employees from the uproar over critical comments he made about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Limbaugh quit late Wednesday, three days after saying on the show that McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.

"The great people at ESPN did not want to deal with this kind of reaction," Limbaugh told the National Association of Broadcasters at its convention in Philadelphia on Thursday. "The path of least resistance became for me to resign."

George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports, accepted Limbaugh's resignation Wednesday. ABC and ESPN are owned by Walt Disney Co.

"We regret the circumstances surrounding this," Bodenheimer said. "We believe that he took the appropriate action to resolve this matter expeditiously."

On Wednesday, McNabb said he didn't mind criticism of his performance, but was upset Limbaugh made his race an issue and said it was too late for an apology.

"It's somewhat shocking to hear that on national TV from him," McNabb said. "It's not something that I can sit here and say won't bother me."

Something just came to mind that should have long ago. When I was growing up like all kids I was picked on and remember my Mother telling me "Stick and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" what ever became of that? and why doesnt it apply here? I admit Rush should have left his comments to himself but either way what REAL harm did it cause McNabb?

I seem to recall hearing a line in a movie once...

I remember a line from a movie too, Rhune:

"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!!"

We have laws today that weren't in existence when I was a kid - sexual harassment - "bullying" due to Columbine - and one can be brought up on charges for making racially slurred statements.  Spank your kid and said kid can dial 911 and have you arrested.

Teachers in school constantly have to watch their P's and Q's and they have to watch their back too, or some student is liable to stab them or shoot them and/or the classroom.

I like movies!

The way Limbaugh went about expressing himself was wrong, but his point was right. McNabb isn't all that great. Micheal Vick.. he's good.
Had he left it there it never would have gone anywhere. BUT that show gets so heated and passionate that you wouldn't believe what is said sometimes.
I laugh at someof the hosts because they have a love affair with certain teams and players and even when they have stunk it up for 3-4 weeks they still talk like they are going to win the superbowl

Probably most of them agree with what he said, he just didn't have enough "cool" to keep his  Lips Sealed.  These sportscasters may need to keep a roll of ducktape handy!
A lot of them sound very very dumb!
Now, let's get on John Madden!  As the song goes, "What Was I/(they) Thinkin') when he was hired.  No longer do I sit down with my husband and watch MMF.  YUK, the voice alone is like scrapping a nail on a chalkboard!
