Magician Roy Horn Stable Two Days After Mauling

http://reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=3559660

Sun October 5, 2003 12:26 PM ET
LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Famed Las Vegas magician Roy Horn of the "Siegfried and Roy" duo remained in critical but stable condition on Sunday, two days after being mauled by a white tiger during a performance, a spokesman said.
Horn spokesman David Kirvin said Horn's condition at University Medical Center had not changed from this time on Saturday. "I think time is a good thing," Kirvin said, saying his survival after more than 36 hours was a "positive" sign.

The seven-year-old male tiger grabbed the performer's forearm about halfway into the Friday night show at the Mirage hotel-casino, witnesses said. When Horn tried to fend the tiger off with his microphone -- hitting the animal in the face and saying "no, no" -- it lunged and bit him on the neck and dragged him offstage, causing massive bleeding, they said.

Handlers sprayed the tiger with a fire extinguisher to separate the animal from Roy, who was conscious when he was rushed from the hotel to undergo about two hours of surgery.

"The doctors are encouraged that he will recover, but it will be several days until the full extent of his injury is known," Kirvin said in an interview on Saturday.

The show has been canceled at least until Christmas and refunds will be issued, he said.

LAS VEGAS — Fans and employees of the Siegfried & Roy (search) show held a candelight vigil as famed performer Roy Horn (search) remained in critical condition after being mauled by a tiger, and the show has been canceled indefinitely, officials said.

About 200 people stood outside the hospital at University Medical Center Sunday night, where Horn, 59, is being treated. He suffered a severe wound to his neck when the 7-year-old male tiger named Montecore attacked Friday night in front of hundreds of people. Officials said Sunday he had improved and could move his hands and feet.

With the show's future uncertain, about 267 employees are out of a job.

A shame about all those people losing their jobs, especially so close to the holidays.  Sad  I am glad to hear that Roy continues to improve.

Roy "Miraculous" After Big Cat Attack

by Lia Haberman
Oct 7, 2003, 11:30 AM PT

That kitschy magic duo Siegfried and Roy have been playing to sold out crowds in Vegas for over 35 years is astounding. That Roy survived Friday's mauling at the paws of one of his rare white tigers is nothing short of "miraculous."

At least so says a Sin City neurosurgeon who operated on the animal trainer after this weekend's incident.

Roy Horn remained in critical but stable condition Tuesday--his official condition not changing since a 600-pound, seven-year-old show cat called Montecore attacked during a performance gone horribly wrong Friday night. The tiger grabbed Horn by the throat and dragged him offstage before crew members could pull the entertainer free.

Dr. Derek Duke diagnosed Horn's injuries as "extremely severe" but said the performer has an "extraordinary will," crucial for recovery. In a statement released Monday, the doctor said Horn is communicating and "responding nicely."

But he dismissed the misconception that Horn had been maintained in a drug-induced coma.

The doctor said it would be "quite some time" before Horn's likelihood of recovery could be determined, but that every day that passed increased his chances.

Meanwhile, the attack could wipe out a planned NBC series Father of the Pride about the white lions who perform in Siegfried and Roy's act.

The animated comedy, slated for fall 2004, was to feature a family of overgrown felines as voiced by John Goodman, Cheryl Hines, Orlando Jones and Carl Reiner.

NBC prez Jeff Zucker said in a statement that the network had "not even thought about the show…We're just praying for Roy and hoping for a full recovery for him."

Also in limbo while Roy recuperates is partner Siegfried Fischbacher, who plans to appear on Larry King Live Wednesday night, along with manager Bernie Yuman, for his first interview since Horn was attacked. The duo's Vegas act has been postponed indefinitely and employees have been handed their walking papers. Execs at the Mirage are also scrambling to find a new show to replace Siegfried & Roy, which netted the casino upwards of $44 million a year.

Earlier today, Yuman told ABC's Good Morning America he believed the tiger was distracted by something in the audience, which threw off the carefully choreographed routine.

"Roy--heroically, from my perception--got in front of him and started to nudge him," Yuman said during a GMA interview, adding, "They were both out of their routine. One thing led to another, and it was a tragic accident."

Roy Horn is still in critical condition after being attacked by his tiger. Horn had to undergo surgery to remove a quarter of his skull to relieve cranial pressure. Horn has suffered a stroke and is partially paralyzed at the moment. Doctors think the paralysis is temporary.

I understand that the part of the skull that was removed was surgically implanted inside his body in order to keep the bone from dying.   When the brain swelling subsides, it can be replaced.
