Rhune - maybe you can find hard copy - apparently this just happened.   Sad

News has come in that two are dead and that search and rescues efforts are underway.  All other boats waiting to dock are on hold.

Extensive Injuries Reported After Staten Island Ferry Accident

Wednesday, October 15, 2003

So far, 12 have died

NEW YORK  — A Staten Island ferry crashed Wednesday as it was docking, severely injuring at least 10 people after it slammed into the wooden pilings along the side of the dock. Some victims lost limbs in the accident.

"There were numerous injuries like fractures and lacerations," said Fire Department spokeswoman Maria Lamberti. "There were a couple of people with amputations -- legs and arms."

The victims were taken to Staten Island University Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital following the accident around 3:20 p.m. Firefighters aboard the damaged ferry sifted through the rubble looking for victims.

The accident occurred as the ship, the Andrew J. Barberi, arrived on the Staten Island end of its run across New York Harbor, said Mike Loughran, a fire department spokesman.

Justin Girard, a witness to the accident, told NY1 that he saw smoke and heard screams after the ferry crashed at the St. George Terminal. The front end of the ferry suffered extensive damage to the right side of its hull.

The ferry, which has three levels, has a capacity of 6,000, but it is unclear how many people were aboard at the time of the accident.

The ship sustained a huge hole on its side, the official said, and debris may have fallen on some passengers.

The Department of Transportation confirmed the accident, but could provide nothing further.

The ferry carries 70,000 commuters per day on the 25-minute free ride between Staten Island and lower Manhattan. Five boats make 104 daily trips between the two boroughs.

On Sept. 19, 1997, a car plunged off the Andrew J. Barberi as it was docking in Staten Island, causing minor injuries to the driver and a deckhand who was knocked overboard by the car.

The news was really flying that day.  Much of what was reported earlier wasn't correct.  UPDATE....

NTSB Focuses on Ferry Crash Pilot's Medication

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,100508,00.html

Saturday, October 18, 2003

NEW YORK  — With its flags at half-mast and its splintered side shrouded in blue tarps, the Staten Island ferry  that crashed into a pier earlier in the week, killing 10 people, was moved Saturday from its dock to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for repairs.

The National Transportation Safety Board has all but finished its investigation aboard the ferry, which city officials hope will eventually be returned to service.

Investigators spent just over two days probing the twisted metal and splintered wood while the ferry was in the Staten Island terminal and are now focusing on interviews.

NTSB Chairwoman Ellen Engleman said Friday a federal subpoena was also issued for tests that could determine if blood-pressure medication taken by Assistant Capt. Richard Smith, who was at the helm, may have played a role in the crash. Weather and mechanical problems are not believed to have been the causes.

The Andrew J. Barberi was going full throttle, about 17 mph, when it went off course Wednesday afternoon and hit the concrete pier hundreds of feet from its normal slip, crushing the ferry's lower side. In addition to the 10 people killed, 65 were injured, including three who lost limbs.

Authorities were looking into whether Smith's blood pressure medication caused him to slump at the controls and whether other crew members — who might have been able to take over for him — were out of position.

Smith attempted suicide shortly after the crash and remains hospitalized.

Investigators also said they would interview the ferry's captain, Michael Gansas, on Tuesday. His whereabouts at the time of the crash remained unclear, and authorities were looking into whether Gansas was in position to take over for the pilot if anything happened.

Gansas told investigators that he saw Smith slumped forward over the throttle just before the crash.

No criminal charges have been filed against Smith, although authorities said he immediately fled the scene.

Tests have indicated Smith was not drinking or using illegal drugs before the accident.

City procedures — but not Coast Guard regulations — require both men to be in the pilot house when the ferry is moving. Investigators say they have received conflicting reports as to the captain's whereabouts.

Gansas' attorney, Bill Bennett, declined comment Friday on the investigation into what he called "an unfortunate accident."

Gansas has been on sick leave since the accident, the city Transportation Department spokesman Tom Cocola said.

The Staten Island ferries carry 70,000 people daily across New York Harbor between Staten Island and Manhattan.
