Fires Roar Through Southern California

Friday, October 24, 2003

LOS ANGELES — Fires raging in Southern California have forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents and officials warn the three blazes could get worse before the situation improves.

Firefighters are worried that hot Santa Ana winds of up to 40 mph could seriously complicate their ability to contain the three separate fires. In Fontana, where 3,500 acres have already burned, the fire is only 17 percent contained, fire officials said.

The Fontana  fire is being blamed on arson but no arrests have been made yet.

North of San Diego at Camp Pendleton, one 2,772-acre brush fire is threatening about 300 homes. The fire started on a training range Tuesday, apparently sparked by ammunition used in military exercises.

So far this week, wildfires have destroyed five homes and chewed through about 8,000 acres.

One fire in the San Bernardino National Forest did not immediately threaten homes in the Lytle Creek area, 55 miles east of Los Angeles, but an evacuation was ordered because the area's 1,000-plus residents could have been trapped by the approaching flames, said Bill Peters, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry.

The Red Cross set up a temporary shelter in Fontana for people displaced by the fire, which was 17 percent contained Thursday.

In Riverside County, firefighters allowed evacuated residents to return Thursday after closing in on a 2,390-acre fire that destroyed five homes.

"Nothing; there's not one thing," Kim Peterson told the Los Angeles Times as she inspected the remains of her father's damaged trailer in the hills south of Loma Linda, about 70 miles east of Los Angeles.

Peterson's 85-year-old father tried to fight the flames and sustained second-degree burns. Rummaging through the burned rubble was especially painful because her mother's ashes, which had been kept inside the trailer, were lost in the fire, she sad.

The blaze in Reche Canyon, started by an arsonist Tuesday, damaged three other homes and burned a barn, 21 outbuildings, a boat and several vehicles. State forestry Capt. Rick Vogt said the fire was 80 percent contained Thursday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I remember trying to drive in the santa anas, they are something else...I had a little car and a gust would hit suddenly, and I would literally be pushed over about 2 lanes of traffic.  They had days when trucks were not allowed to drive on the highways down there in certain areas because the gusts were so bad, they would push a truck right over, crushing other cars.

Hundreds flee fire near L.A.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The threat of hot, dry Santa Ana winds forecast this weekend prompted authorities to evacuate hundreds of people as one of three untamed fires in Southern California threatened to block their only way out.

More than 3,500 acres of the San Bernardino National Forest have been scorched since that fire started Tuesday, said Maria Daniels, a fire information officer for the blaze.

Homeowners have been evacuated from the path of a Southern California wildfire that is raging out of control near the city of Fontana.
