Paul Newman Helps Entire Kansas Town Tue, Nov 04, 2003, 11:11 AM PT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Actor Paul Newman, known for his charitable donations, has made another "generous" contribution to the southeast Kansas town of Franklin, devastated by a tornado in May. "We decided that it would be best not to give the exact figure, but it was a lovely, generous amount," resident Phyllis Bitner tells the AP. "We haven't earmarked the money yet for a specific project, but it will go a long way toward something." Newman, 78, delivered greetings and well wishes to the town along with a personal check made out to the Franklin Community Council Inc. A tornado hit Franklin, population of approximately 500 residents, on May 4, destroying about a third of the homes and bringing down the community center and post office. All of the profits from Newman's line of food products go to various charities and has given $150 million to date. His charity also runs a summer camp for kids with illnesses called the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, named after his movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Newman won a best actor Oscar in 1987 for "The Color of Money." His other films include "The Sting," "Cool Hand Luke" and, most recently, "Road to Perdition."
