Toddler revived after being pronounced dead
Saturday, November 8, 2003 Posted: 3:59 PM EST (2059 GMT)

FULLERTON, California (AP) -- A toddler who was revived nearly two hours after she was believed to have drowned -- and 40 minutes after doctors had declared her dead -- was responding to touch and sound Saturday, hospital officials said.

Twenty-month-old Mackayala Jespersen was in critical condition but responsive a day after she was found in her family's swimming pool, said Children's Hospital of Orange County spokeswoman Denise Almazan.

The child's family thanked the public for their "prayers and support," Almazan said.

Mackayala's mother found her floating face down in the backyard pool Friday morning, police Sgt. Sean Fares said. Police and paramedics tried to revive her, and rushed her to Anaheim Memorial Hospital, but doctors there pronounced her dead.

Forty minutes later, police Detective Mike Kendrick was conducting a routine investigation into her death when he noticed her chest moving as if she was breathing. He summoned doctors, who were able to revive her.

"It was a very emotional moment for everyone," said Fullerton police spokesman Sgt. Ron Gillett. "We thought she didn't make it and then she did. It was the lowest of the lows and the highest of the highs."

Mark Langdorf, chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, said it is not uncommon for toddlers to survive drownings after showing little or no signs of life, especially if the water is cold.

What was unusual in Mackayala's case, he said, was the time involved.

"If you had said she came back to life after 10 minutes I would be surprised, but 40 minutes is just exceptional," he said.

Revived toddler still in critical condition
Tuesday, November 11, 2003 Posted: 8:49 AM EST (1349 GMT)

ORANGE, California (AP) -- Early tests on a toddler who was revived nearly two hours after she was presumed drowned found no signs of brain damage, a family lawyer said.

Her doctor, however, warned that the risk of damage remained high.

Twenty-month-old Mackayala Jespersen has been in critical condition since she was revived Friday -- 40 minutes after doctors had declared her dead -- and her vital signs were stable Monday, said Dr. James Cappon at the Children's Hospital of Orange County.

"The small progress that she has made is surprising and at some level encouraging," Cappon said.

He added: "She is at very high risk to have sustained some damage, even permanent damage, but the extent of which remains to be determined."

Family attorney Brian Oxman said the girl was able to put her arms around her mother, but it was hard to say if it was a hug because the girl was sedated.

A CAT scan of her brain determined the girl would "not be in any vegetative condition, nor will she be someone who's got to be cared for her bodily functions," Oxman said. It was unclear whether she might have lesser damage, he said.

The girl was found floating face down in her family's swimming pool Friday morning and was rushed to Anaheim Memorial Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Forty minutes later, police Detective Mike Kendrick was conducting a routine investigation into the death when he noticed Mackayala's chest was moving. He summoned doctors, who were able to revive her.
