Wal-Mart drops prices for Christmas

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is cutting prices on a number of hot toys earlier in the holiday season than such sales are normally seen, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a survey conducted by Banc of America Securities found that Wal-Mart's prices of 15 popular toys were 12 percent lower than those of Toys "R" Us, the largest stand-alone toy retailer, and 8 percent lower than prices at discount retailer Target, the nation's No. 2 general retailer after Wal-Mart.

The Journal says that Toys "R" Us executives have acknowledged that the Wal-Mart price cutting has caught them somewhat by surprise and was among factors hurting its recently reported third-quarter results.

The newspaper said the lower prices are even found on some toys in short supply, including Leap Frog's Explorer Globe. And it reported that some of Wal-Mart's retail prices are below wholesale prices. For instance, it is charging $29.74 for the Hot Wheels T-Wrecks Play Set, which has a wholesale price of $42, and $19.46 for the Sesame Street Hokey Pokey Elmo, whose wholesale price is $24.

Does anyone here choose not to shop at Walmart?

My husband has refused to set foot in their stores.

(PS I think this may end up on politics section of the board)

I really intended the politics section to be for political/governmental related items.  I think there are items in the News section where people may disagree and have different reasons or agendas about it, but that doesn't necessarily make them "political" items.  I don't forsee any reason why this one should be moved unless it starts to involve a law or politician.

I don't frequently shop at Wal-mart, but I have on plenty of occasions over the years.  They built a new Wal-mart Neighborhood Market near my house recently - this is a new thing by them, it's a gocery store only, with a few more merchandise items, like packaged toys in the cereal aisle than a normal grocery store would have, and I have shopped there a couple times now because it's in a convenient location.

Grin

He believes this company takes business away from Canadian small businesses.

truth is that most box stores do this.

They also use non-union staff and there are the usual allegations of overseas sweatshops and labor abuses to keep prices low.

Walmart is not the only company that does this.

I just kind of figured if we are getting into a discussion of overseas labour, sweatshops, union labor vs. non-union we were heading back to a michael moore type discussion. Rhune is right of course we should leave it here until that arises.

they may not be having clothing made in myanmar any more but in the year 2000 they were.  We fundamentally refuse to support any business that uses the labor force of myanmar.  4 cents an hour is not a normal wage not to mention they have zero political freedoms and essentially work under threat.

Ok, I guess I could see how this could turn into a political discussion, given those factors.

I was thinking more along the lines of how Wal-mart puts other businesses out of business by undercutting their prices so much.  It's nice to get a good price, but at the cost of putting other companies out of business because you're going so far below whole sale, and making up for it in areas other stores can't.
