Deadly Flu....

Deadly Start To Flu Season

Nov. 26, 2003

(CBS/AP) In a Denver hospital, nurses and other staff have masked themselves against an epidemic that's already claimed the lives of at least four Colorado children.

A 2-year-old and a 21-month-old died at the Children's Hospital in Denver in the past week, hospital officials said Tuesday. They did not release any other details. In Larimer County, health officials said an 8-year-old boy died of the flu.

Family members identified the Larimer victim as 8-year-old Joseph David Williams of Wellington, who died Monday.

"It happened so quick and so sudden," Joseph's father, Scott Williams, said Tuesday. "He was fine. He wasn't even that sick."

A 15-year-old who had the flu died at Children's last week and was believed to be the first flu death in the state this season.

So far, Colorado, Texas and Nevada lead the nation in confirmed cases and infectious disease experts predict this could be the worst flu season in 30 years, CBS News Correspondent Bob McNamara reports. The experts say as many as 70,000 deaths could occur – nearly double the number of flu-related fatalities for an average year.

"It's crazy," said Denver pediatrician Dean Prina, who saw 40 children Monday. "It started earlier this year and seems more intense. It's among the worst flu seasons I've seen in my 23 years."

Partly to blame is the discovery that this year's vaccine may not match one severe strain, which has puzzled experts.

"We would feel much better if we knew really how good the vaccine is working," says Dr. Keiji Fukuda of the federal Centers for Disease Control. "We expect it to be working, we just don't know how well its working."

Texas schoolchildren have been particularly stricken, with the flu causing high absentee rates across the state. Each case is typically a four- to six-day ordeal.

"You're fine one minute and the next minute you are just really sick and you've got muscle aches and high fever," says Dr. Patricia Chandler of Primacare.

The elderly, also at risk, have crowded pharmacies and health departments across Texas for vaccinations.

Doctors warn that getting immunized for a long flu season now means not having to deal with vaccine shortages that could come later.

Makes a woman like me, with a child with no immunities for fighting flu in particular, very nervous.

I just want to thank you for posting this.  I immediately sent it to all my staff and we have re-implemented all of our strict in office procedures that we had during SARS last winter.

I heard on the radio that they are highly recommending the flu shot but when I took my daughter to get it at her pediatrician last week they were all out of the vaccine and not sure if they were going to get any more from the government.   (welcome again to the Canadian health care system).

One child died in Toronto this week and 3 people have died in Peterborough and 3 more deaths in the area are suspicious.

Please everyone be careful.

Rhune please be cautious.  I am praying that you will have a better diagnosis after the biopsy this week.  Your son will have some immunities but you are correct that they are weakened having the IgA deficiency.

This flu season is not to be ignored.  A close friend of ours was hospitalized for six days with the flu and just returned home on Wednesday.  He is unable to take the flu shot because of a bout with Guillian-Barre Syndrome after receiving the flu vaccine a few years ago.

Those of you who have not had your shot, should try to get one ASAP.  Mr. I and I took care of that a few weeks ago, thank goodness.

Unfortunately I waited because we were pending a biopsy date and I was unsure if they wanted him to have a shot that close to the surgery.  Now that we have the surgery set, I called to schedule shots and they are all out too.  Cry

Thank you addams!  However any of you can procure this vaccine - I hope you and yours can get it.  Please stay healthy and wise!

I'd treat this flu just as you're suggesting to your staff addams - like SARS.

OMG Rhune!  Aren't there any clinics around you could call to see if they have the vaccine?

A couple of weeks ago when my son (HIV+) and I were talking about this, he "informed" me he's not a candidate for flu immunization injections.  Well - har dee har har - his physician gave him this shot.  Thank you Lord.

I'm hearing that this particular strain of flu is different.  The professionals aren't saying, however, that these flu shots won't touch it but will make the symptoms lessen in intensity.  You can read here though the report is 10 days old.

I don't know how many of you read my article on the Russian Bacteriophages, but it ties into this and is very interesting stuff...

I have never had a flu shot.  However, I went to see my doc today because I suspected pneumonia. Have had it several times.  Xrays were fine, thank goodness.  Seems I have some scar tissue that can become inflamed very easily. And I have been on a sneezing binge lately, so I think this may have caused it.  I was astonished at all of the people lined up to get a flu shot though.  I am definitely going to schedule myself for one. Has anyone who has had one had any side effects?

I hear people say over and over that you can't get the flu from the flu shot, but I know several who appear to have.
