Large amount of animals in Nat'l Zoo dying

GMA  had a segment on this situation today.  I hoped they would have the story on their website by now but they don't.  So I've done some digging.....

What a very sick and heartbreaking thing this is...

Damage Control In Zoo Deaths
WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2003

(CBS) While officials at Washington D.C.'s National Zoo are trying to keep the public's focus on the positive, behind the scenes they've begun a massive public relations campaign to manage the fallout from the rash of unusual, and unnatural animal deaths, reports CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson.

Some of the deaths were obviously preventable, others mysterious or unexplained. Two red pandas were poisoned, prairie dogs were eaten by rampant rats, a bald eagle was killed in his own cage, and two zebras were starved to death.

Red Fox Suspected In Eagle's Death
 WASHINGTON, July 10, 2003

Quote:  "When you see an animal like this die, you say 'what really has changed?' So far I don't see that a lot has changed."
Richard Farinato, Humane Society

(CBS/AP) A wild red fox was the likely predator that got into a bald eagle's enclosure at the National Zoo and killed the bird, zoo officials said Wednesday.

The 21-year old male eagle, housed separately from two bald eagles that are unable to fly, died July 4, the same day that the zoo celebrated a new exhibit designed especially for bald eagles hurt in the wild.

And this from January - seems these people aren't getting a handle on protecting this creatures.  Angry

National Zoo Probes Animal Deaths
WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2003

(CBS) A pygmy hippopotamus was found dead Monday morning at the National Zoo, one of several animal deaths in recent months at one of the world's best known animal parks.

Zookeepers discovered the nine-year-old female in her exhibit area, located in the same building that houses elephants, giraffes, and Nile hippos.

The 600-pound animal showed no signs of disease and seemed normal up until her death, zoo spokesman Robert Hoage said.

Responses to Recent Media Reports

Everyone at the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park is concerned about animal care and improvements have been and continue to be made. Many of the issues in this week's stories in The Washington Post have already been addressed. During Dr. Spelman's three years as director, the Zoo has expanded its animal care staff to include four full-time vets, three new curators, a nutritionist, and a pest-control specialist. Changes in procedures and communications have been implemented. In addition, the Zoo has initiated a significant renovation of its aging facilities.

Congress has asked the National Academy of Sciences to convene a panel of experts to look into all aspects of zoo management, including animal care. We look forward to receiving the Academy's report and acting on their recommendations.

This  has always been one of my favourite zoos.  I am so sorry to hear this.

Zoos need a lot of funds to operate fully to protect the animals.  The truth is that they cannot get it just from admission fees and the National Zoo doesn't even charge an admission fee.

I remember seeing all of these animals during my last visit there 2 years ago especially the prairie dogs.

Look at just a few of the Nat'l Zoos sponsors, etc.  How in the name of the Lord did some of these animals succumb to starvation?

Something is very wrong with this picture.

Several years ago, I went to the zoo in Tulsa.  First thing I noticed was an awful stench.  The further in we got - the worse it was.  You can bet I called upon the powers that be to do something about it.

The L.A. Zoo was pretty stinky too - but not consistantly so.

One of the best zoo's I've ever visited was the the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park.  Simply amazing.  And a "must see" for animal lovers.

Must be the season and sentimentality, but I clicked on that site (remember Mr.KK and Mrs.KK?) and the Komodo Dragon?  I went to "Adopt-An-Animal" and adopted a Komodo Dragon.  Yeah!  I did!

This is a crummy photo

It was all I could do to not to do these guys too:
