Firefighters are digging through the rubble of a collapsed theater in downtown Toronto trying to reach one person trapped, Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino said. One person died in the collapse and at least 14 were injured including three children, police said

The chief said rescuers believe "visible contact" had been made with the trapped person. Thermal imaging is being used in the search. Three of the injured are children, police said.

Toronto Police Sgt. Jim Muscat said the people rescued in the collapsed building included children.

"Some of [the rescued] were workmen and some of them were children that were in an adjacent school," Muscat said. "My understanding is there were three children taking English-as-second-language courses."

Local television stations broadcast pictures of workers pulling a man from beneath debris, placing him on a gurney and then covering him with canvas before lowering him to the ground.

It was unclear if the man was alive. Muscat said injuries to the rescued victims don't appear to be life threatening.

It was not immediately known what caused the collapse.

"We're going through the rubble and the collapsed material -- obviously in the process of rescuing people who are there," Muscat said.

The Uptown Theatre opened in 1920, according to a Web site dedicated to the building.

from pulse24.com the following story Quote:
It was almost a miracle that only one person died. Rescue officials at the scene of a building collapse at the site of the old Uptown Theatre at Yonge and Bloor Sts., have confirmed they haven’t found any more victims in the ruins of the buildings next door.

The structure was being demolished when it suddenly fell over at around 10:35am Monday, sending a wall of dirt and rubble onto several nearby businesses - including the Yorkville English Academy, which provides lessons for those learning the language.

The institution is supposed to be for adults only, but there were three children inside at the time of the incident. All got out alive, although each suffered some injuries. One, a 10-year-old boy, fractured both legs.

An adult male died in the disaster, and crews kept working late into the night desperately trying to find another person believed to still be trapped in the rocky ruins. But after several hours of clawing through the rubble using special tools and even bare hands, Toronto Fire officials confirmed there’s no one left to find.

“We have established that there was no other victims in the building and that we have removed the rubble of the second floor of the structure,” explains Chief Bill Stewart. “And the situation itself has been resolved.”

The announcement brought a palpable sense of relief, after crews spent hours using thermal imaging equipment and police dogs to try to locate the suspected missing victim. But fortunately, they didn’t find anyone.

Authorities have identified the lone deceased, but haven't released his name. There are reports he may have sacrificed his own life trying to save one of the children inside. But officials won’t confirm that.

Fourteen people were taken to hospital overall - three children and eleven adults. But everyone involved knows it could have been a lot worse.

"It was break time," teacher John Harrington relates about the timing of the disaster. "Most of the people were on their way out." A few more minutes either way, and the results could have been very different.

The theatre was being torn down, when the back half - located near Balmuto and Charles Sts. - suddenly fell over. Seventeen Toronto Fire Units raced to the scene, including the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team and HAZMAT crews.

Officials closed Bloor between Yonge and Bay, but made short work of fears over a natural gas leak. Through it all, the Yonge subway line kept running underground, as the rhythm of the city continued unabated.

Addams......you were the first person I thought of when the article and TV said "mid-downtown" Toronto.  It's truly a miracle more weren't killed!  Thanks for the update.
