Jackson to break silence on '60 Minutes'
Friday, December 26, 2003 Posted: 12:16 PM EST (1716 GMT)

CBS' "60 Minutes" will air an interview with the pop superstar on Sunday, marking Jackson's first public comments since his November 20 arrest on suspicion of child molestation.

Ed Bradley interviewed Jackson for about 30 minutes Thursday at a hotel in Los Angeles, CBS spokesman Kevin Tedesco said Friday.

Jackson, 45, is charged with seven counts of performing lewd or lascivious acts upon a child under 14 and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent. He remains free on $3 million bail.

CBS also announced Friday that it has rescheduled a Jackson music special that had been abruptly postponed last month after the molestation charges surfaced. The special, "Michael Jackson Number Ones," will air on Friday, January 2, CBS entertainment spokesman Chris Ender said.

"We certainly wouldn't have rescheduled the entertainment special if he hadn't addressed the situation elsewhere on our network," Ender said.

Jackson's last television interview, with British journalist Martin Bashir, was seen by 27 million people on ABC last February. But that interview so infuriated the Jackson camp that they made Jackson's ex-wife Debbie Rowe available to deny some of the things said in the Bashir special.

Bradley had been pursuing an interview with Jackson even before the molestation charges. The CBS newsman traveled to Jackson's Neverland estate last February for an interview, but Jackson got cold feet and canceled it at the last minute.

The CBS entertainment special had been set to air the day before Thanksgiving, to coincide with the release of a greatest hits package. Besides Jackson performance footage, interviews had been conducted with Dick Clark, Beyonce Knowles, Mary J. Blige and others about Jackson's impact on pop culture.

If it's anything at all like his last interview where he talked about how the only plastic surgery he'd had done was a little minor work on his nose and absolutely nothing else, then I can't imagine he'll have anything worth saying.  He's clearly able to look at the camera and smile and lie his ass off.

Jackson Interview Transcript

NEW YORK, Dec. 28, 2003

(CBS) For most of his life, Michael Jackson has been in the spotlight, most recently because of what has been described as bizarre behavior -— bizarre behavior that has now led him to be charged with sexually molesting a 13-year-old boy. If convicted, he could spend 20 years in prison.

Now out on bail and awaiting trial, tonight Michael Jackson speaks out for the first time about his arrest, his accuser and the charges that have, for the moment, made his life a shambles.

We sat down with Michael Jackson on Christmas Day at a hotel in Los Angeles –one of several cities where he has been in seclusion since authorities in Santa Barbara officially charged him with seven counts of sexual molestation and two counts of using an “intoxicating agent” — reported to be alcohol — to seduce the boy.

........whether he is innocent or guilty as all heck, he does not help himself by wearing lipstick, having all the plastic surgery.  He needs to do some red-blooded manly man things to convince us!
Personally, the man has great talent, not to be denied.
On a personal note, it boils my husband's blood to see him on the tv screen with all the makeup, and probably does most "manly men."

This whole scene is just sad to me.  May the truth be told.

I'm in the minority, I know. But I am of the opinion of innocent until proven guilty (with the exception of Scott Peterson.)  I agree that this is one warped and sick man.  And in all honesty, I think he needs to be in a psychiatric ward.  However, I also think the mother of this young boy involved is out for cash.  And if this turns out to be true, she is just as sick as Michael, coaching her son to be a part of it.

Edited to add:  luci, that must be a pic of you and Mr. l.  What a FINE couple you make!   Dang, he looks like a senator or something.

It's been reported that at least 3/4's of MJ's "make-up" is tattooed.  He adds extra mascara and lipstick where needed (  Roll Eyes ) otherwise, the rest is permanent.

Well, who knows, it could be either one. He states that he's got this disease that's causing him to lose pigmentation in his skin, and that disease does exist and I have known a couple people in my lifetime that have had it, and in both cases it did not cause either one of them to go white as a ghost all over...it gave them mottled looking skin with light and dark patches, almost like giant freckles.  So, *if* he has this disease he's obviously doing something to even it out to this solid white.

Entertainment - AP

Sources: Nation of Islam Aiding Jackson
26 minutes ago  Add Entertainment - AP to My Yahoo!

By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent

LOS ANGELES - Members of the Nation of Islam have begun playing a role in Michael Jackson (news)'s affairs, The Associated Press has learned, although the controversial group denies having any official part in the pop star's life.

AFP

Sources close to the Jackson camp, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the AP that Nation of Islam members have handled security at the singer's Neverland ranch and have begun taking over some of his business affairs since he was accused of committing lewd acts on a child.

The sources have been involved in Jackson's business affairs for at least a year, and each independently provided the details concerning the Nation of Islam links to the singer.

The group, which in the past has been accused of anti-Semitism and inflammatory, separatist rhetoric, issued a statement Monday after receiving inquiries from the AP and other news organizations.

"The Nation of Islam, in response to several inquiries, has said today that it has no official business or professional relationship with Mr. Michael Jackson," the statement said. "The Nation of Islam joins thousands of other people in wishing him well."

Jackson's attorney, Mark Geragos, also dismissed the reports and denied that Nation of Islam members had been working out of Geragos' office.

"They are not part of his defense," Geragos said. "I'm certainly not pushing away support from anyone, but I don't ask people what their religious affiliation is when they offer support."

Geragos acknowledged that when he held a news conference on Jackson's behalf after charges were announced on Dec. 18, one of those standing behind him was Leonard F. Muhammad, identified on the Nation of Islam's Web site as its chief of staff.

"Leonard Muhammad was there," Geragos said. "He's one of Michael's supporters."

Under the leadership of Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam advocates black self-empowerment and a separate African-American state; Jackson is not a Muslim nor a member of the Nation of Islam, according to one of his brothers.

Asked about the Nation of Islam's reported role in directing Jackson's affairs, Jackson business adviser Charles Koppelman said, "It's not the case as to his music, finances and assets. I think it's primarily in security."

Koppelman, a former chief of EMI Records, and another adviser, Alan Whitman, said they remain in charge of Jackson's music and finances.

"I receive his bills and write his checks," said Whitman, an accountant. "Anything else I relate to Mr. Jackson is confidential."

Koppelman, who like Whitman has been a Jackson adviser for the past year, said he has not talked to Jackson about the Nation of Islam. "If he gets involved on a spiritual basis, that's his business," he said.

Jackson's brother Jermaine has converted to Islam but is not a member of the Nation of Islam. Asked during an appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live" whether his brother planned to convert, Jermaine Jackson said he did not.

Separately, Jackson spokesman Stuart Backerman announced his resignation Monday, citing "strategic differences." Backerman refused to comment on reports involving the Nation of Islam.

Geragos said Backerman was fired last week because he spoke to the news media during a Jackson family get-together Dec. 20 at Jackson's Neverland estate near Santa Barbara.

The event was designed to show support for the embattled singer after he was charged with seven counts of performing lewd or lascivious acts on a child under 14 and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent, reportedly wine.

"He was terminated by me personally for talking when I told him not to," Geragos said.

Backerman responded to Geragos' statement by saying, "That's untrue."

"I was the spokesman up until I just resigned. I was actively involved with management," Backerman said. While Backerman did not immediately explain the reasons for his departure, he said he left reluctantly.

"I was not fired," he said.

In the CBS "60 Minutes" interview that was broadcast Sunday, Jackson said he was "manhandled" after he surrendered Nov. 20 and was still in pain from the handcuffs.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department on Monday issued a statement reiterating its previous denial that Jackson was mistreated, saying he "was treated with courtesy and professionalism throughout the arrest and booking process."
