Friday, December 26, 2003

TEHRAN, Iran  — More than 20,000 people were reported killed after a devastating mangitude 6.7 earthquake (search) rattled Bam, a historic city in southeast Iran (search) on Friday.

"Rescue workers have found more bodies. The figure is now more than 20,000," an Iranian government official told Reuters. The number of injured exceeded 50,000, officials said.

President Mohammad Khatami said the loss and destruction was a "national tragedy" as his government declared three days of mourning for the victims.

"The quake hit the city when most of the people were in bed, raising fears that the death toll may go higher," said Hasan Khoshrou, a legislator for Kerman province where the quake occurred.

Officials surveying the city of 80,000 people from helicopter said about 60 percent of the city's houses were destroyed, Khoshrou said. Water, power and phone lines were cut. The earthquake struck at about 5:30 a.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey (search) reported the quake's magnitude was 6.7, capable of causing severe damage. It reported an aftershock of magnitude 5.4 about two hours later.

Now, I find it interesting that 2 earthquakes of similar magnitude happened on different sides of the world in the same week basically.  I wonder what kind of geological correlation there is between these.  My thoughts to the families and rescue workers of this tragedy...

Well, probably there's no correlation whatsoever.  The sad horrid thing though, is that in CA., the bldgs that went down were quite old - so that was to be expected in a magnitude of that size.

However, in Bam, Iran that's quite a different story.  I think most of the bldgs there are made mostly of mud and such.  I'm so sorry for those people and send them prayers for safety galore.

Rescuers Search for Survivors of Iran Quake
Saturday, December 27, 2003

BAM, Iran  — Relatives and rescuers used everything from bare hands to bulldozers Saturday to retrieve victims of a powerful earthquake that crumbled vast swaths of this city of mud-brick buildings into powder and frost-chilled rubble, killing thousands of people.

The destruction was so all-encompassing that a reliable death toll in the city of 80,000 was still unavailable. Most people were asleep when the earthquake, which the U.S. Geological Survey (search) measured at magnitude 6.6, struck at 5:28 a.m. Friday.

The Interior Ministry estimated the death toll at 20,000 but officials in the region said it could be double that amount.

"An unbelievable human disaster has occurred," said Akbar Alavi, the governor of Kerman (search), the provincial capital. "As more bodies are pulled out, we fear that the death toll may reach as high as 40,000."

I have so many dear and close Iranian friends that I am having considerable trouble with this news.  It is so upsetting to see so many lives lost.

It's going to be a long and hard wait, addams.  Prayers are all we can offer right now.  It's so cold in the desert at this time of the year too.  I feel so much for these people....

The death toll at this point is 28,000.  Unbelievable...

BAM, Iran  — Iran's president thanked his country's biggest enemy, the United States, for sending help after this weekend's devastating earthquake, as survivors Tuesday mobbed relief trucks and bulldozers dug trench after trench to fill with the white-shrouded bodies of the dead.
