STEVE - What were you thinking?

When I saw this on the news this morning, I could hardly believe my ears and eyes.

Irwin Takes Baby to First Crocodile Feeding

Friday, January 02, 2004

BRISBANE, Australia — Crocodile hunter Steve Irwin (search) took his month-old son to his first croc feeding on Friday, offering the reptile a chicken with one hand and holding the baby in the other.

With a capacity crowd looking on, Irwin dangled a dead chicken before the 13-foot crocodile named Murray, which snapped up the offering. Irwin's tiny son Bob looked on from his other arm.

"He's one-month-old, so it's about time Bob got out there and did his first croc demo," the Australian celebrity told the crowd at his Australian Zoo.

Irwin's wife Terri, who gave birth to her second child on Dec. 1, also attended the show, billed as Bob's "croc feeding debut."

Irwin's show, "The Crocodile Hunter (search)," served as the basis for the movie "The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course," which came out in 2002.

.......and I'm wondering the same thing!  What a stupid, dumb, idiot thing to do.  If he wants to risk his life this is one thing, but to put a month old baby in striking distance of that crocidile is good fodder for CPS to pay him a visit.  Do they have CPS in Australia, well they should!  And where was the Mother?   Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

Cricky mates!  Steve is in hot water for this stunt.

Crikey, Steve Irwin's baby in a croc shocker
Christine Caulfield

STEVE Irwin sparked outrage yesterday when he held his baby son a metre from the mouth of a crocodile at his Queensland zoo.

Child advocates branded the Crocodile Hunter reckless for holding one-month-old Bob while feeding the giant crocodile a dead chicken. Wife Terri looked on as Irwin then "walked" Bob to the crocodile pool at his Sunshine Coast wildlife park as the 4m reptile, named Murray, lurked nearby.

Irwin defended the stunt, saying the baby was never in danger.

"This kid has to grow up to be croc savvy," he told the Herald Sun.

"I guess what I am doing is teaching him to be completely familiar with crocodiles . . . There's no way known I would ever endanger my child."

But Irwin -- recently named Queenslander of the year -- now faces possible investigation by Queensland police, the Department of Families, and workplace safety officers.

The stunt was slammed by child support groups and likened to the furore caused by pop star Michael Jackson when he dangled his newborn baby over a balcony at a hotel in Germany in 2002.

Childhood Foundation chief Joe Tucci described Irwin's actions as outrageous.

"It's neglect, it's reckless, it's a form of endangerment," he said.

"I don't think we should use children as props, and definitely not in situations that are going to put them in such danger."

Mr Tucci said Irwin could faces criminal charges if he continued to put his baby in harm's way.

"He wasn't thinking about the risks to his child. Children need adults to protect them. They should not be involved in any kind of entertainment that puts them at risk," he said.

"Kids under five are unpredictable. It's only one small slip away from a bad accident. He can make his own choices, but his child can't."

Australian Family Association spokesman Bill Muehlenberg said Irwin's conduct was tantamount to child abuse.

Mr Muehlenberg said Irwin had no right to put his baby in peril.

"Most parents would cringe at the sight of such things. One slip, one fall and he is the crocodile's lunch," he said.

Yesterday's show, for the public and the media, was billed as Bob's "croc-feeding debut".

"Good boy, Bob," Irwin said as Murray's jaws snapped shut on the food.

"He's one month old, so it's about time Bob got out there and did his first croc demo," Irwin told the excited crowd.

Irwin later told the Herald Sun: "If I had known it was going to cause a ruckus I would have thrown them (the media) out by their ears.

"I was in complete control of the crocodile. Robert was tucked right in my arm. It is far more dangerous to pack your kid up and go out on the road."

Irwin's wife Terri backed Bob's place in the show.

"When I put him back in the pram he had big eyes and he was smiling and it was a wonderful sensory experience for him. He dug it," she said.

(This totally blows my mind that Terri would say this.  From what I've seen of these two over the years, I'm shocked she would have allowed Steve to do this.)

Queensland Families Minister Judy Spence said she would request the unedited video tapes of the incident.

"I have seen the television footage and while I have no doubt the Irwins love their children very much, I believe it was an error of judgment to place a baby in a potentially dangerous situation," Ms Spence said.

"The department is interested in examining all of the information including a copy of the unedited video and the safety precautions and protocols Mr Irwin was following."

Queensland Police confirmed last night they had received complaints from the public about the incident.

On last night's news, I saw a longer version of the videoclip of Steve doing his idiot thing.  It showed Terri stepping up and Steve handing her the baby.  She had the "slightest" bit of a smile on her lips.

Now, she might have her husband's back - but I have a feeling that when they were behind their private doors, she gave him a mightily swift kick to his butt.  OTOH, she should never have allowed StupidSteve to have the baby in harm's way in the first place.  She very much at fault in this.

And not to rally defense to MJ dangling his baby, but I feel what Steve did was far far far more dangerous.  On little slip and........ewwww.

....I agree with you Wings.  The baby would be nothing more than a tender tasty appetizer for that big croc.

The couple also has another toddler and my opinion on this is that neither child should be anywhere near that zoo,  Who know, they might want to grow up and be real normal people, unlike their parents!

I am intrigued as to what exactly you term "real normal people."
I can only guess you mean people like yourself and your friends.

"Real normal people" have day jobs and a cat called fluffy, whereas people like Steve and Terri travel the world to enlighten and educate about our own wildlife, caring for over 780 endangered, feared or mistreated animals and partake in some of the most extensive breeding programs.

I guess "real normal people" like to spend their lives watching TV at nighttimes, being armchair judges in their own living rooms, while people like Steve and Terri spend their entire lives devoted to conservation and the survival of the world's longest inhabitants.

<Gee Whiz, I just wish Steve and Terri would stop fooling around and become "real normal people", like the rest of us.>

Steve and his family live onsite in a large open house at their Australia Zoo Reptile and Fauna Park, in QLD (or they were the last time I visited).

To move their children away from their family home, as you suggest, or for Steve and Terri to move away from their lifetime wildlife project would be about as detrimental as you can get.

I really can't imagine a better way to grow up. They are surrounded by two very loving parents, learning about Australian and World conservation, as part of their daily lives, having parents whose *job* it is to educate people on everything to do with animal conservation, from the propaganda of sustainable uses of wildlife to the atrocities of animal torture.

The only saddening and disappointing part is that every child can't have the same type of education and firsthand experience. The world would easily be a better place.

Get this you jerk!  A "normal" person does not dangle their baby over a balcony, nor do they take a month old baby into a croc pen.

Just FYI, I don't have a cat, nor do I even like them since I'm allergic to them!

I don't appreciate your attack on me one iota, nor am I am member of this forum to attack or be attacked by other members.  So if you don't have something nice to say to me, don't say anything at all!And I  repeat, those babies do not ned to be anywhere near those reptiles.  Obviously they are on a large enough place to be kept safe!

Get it!  Do not reply to me on this issue!

The definition of NORMAL can go in many directions. People like Steve and his family are far from normal regardless of your definition. I can say as a Father I NEVER would place my child in that kind of danger no matter how skilled I maybe! Allow me a moment to prove my point. Roy Horn was an EXPERT at what he did and had done so for many many years but it took one little distraction and it nearly cost him his LIFE! Steve being an expert should know this and I have to believe he has seen his fair share of animal attacks in his field. Therfore it STUPID and FOOLISH for him to endager his child the way he did. I respect your statements and opinons MM but I feel your off base on this one

You were NOT discussing, you were attacking!  I do not appreciate it,  and said what I have to say.  I call it the way it is!
If the shoe fits.......................

Obviously you don't come into this forum much with 13 posts, so you don't even know me or what I think is normal.

I have nothing more to say to this issue.  You were just plain rude!

Yes, you did offend me.  Aren't you mature enough to know it's not what a  person says, but how it is said?

I'll forgive you, just not at this moment. Grin
