Steve in hot water for this stunt...NOT!

January 2, 2004: Australian Steve Irwin, known as "The Crocodile Hunter," cradles his month-old son, Robert, while feeding a 13-foot crocodile.

Saturday, January 03, 2004
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,107227,00.html

BRISBANE, Australia — "Crocodile hunter" Steve Irwin (search) has survived tussles with giant pythons, poisonous snakes and, of course, crocodiles. Now he faces accusations that he went too far and endangered his infant son.

Irwin drew fire from child welfare groups, but the acting premier of Queensland state, Terry Mackenroth (search), said no charges would be filed for a stunt in which Irwin fed a crocodile with one hand while cradling his month-old son, Robert, in the other on Friday in front of an audience.

"There won't be any charges brought against him; the department of children's services have done what they needed to do, to contact the family and to talk to them about it," Mackenroth said.

"They've (the Irwin family) assured them that it won't happen again and I am sure that if it does they will be back in touch with them," he said.

The incident at Irwin's popular reptile park in Beerwah, north of Brisbane, was captured on Australian television, and viewers later jammed phone lines to express their outrage.

"I think he's a bloody idiot, he's addicted to the attention," crocodile farm owner Keith Cook told The Courier-Mail newspaper.

At a news conference Saturday, Irwin said he probably would have done things differently with his son.

"If I could have my time again I would probably do things a little differently," he said. "But I would be considered a bad parent if I did not teach my children crocodile savvy because they live here. They live in crocodile territory ... so they have to be croc savvy."

He also claimed the danger posed by the crocodile was exaggerated.  :headache:

"It's all about perceived danger; I was in complete control," said Irwin, flanked by his father, his wife and his 5-year-old daughter, Bindi. "People say, 'Well, what if you had fallen?' But for that to take place a meteorite would have had to come out of the sky and hit Australia at 6.6 on the Richter scale like in Iran."

*There's more to this article but I just have to put my  :twocents: in here.  It's obvious to me that this man hasn't lived long enough to know or experience how one's life can be forever changed in a split second.

He showed no remorse, nor did Terri.  I also have an icky feeling Steve will pull this stunt again.  To wit:

Irwin has never been shy about putting himself — and occasionally his family — in what appear to be precarious situations. In its report, Channel 7 showed footage of Bindi (their 5 yo daughter) swimming with a giant python, while Terri frequently joins him on his television jaunts.  :yikes:

I think he won't pull this stunt again soon because even though he feels like he wasn't wrong, he at least recognizes his son could be taken from him for doing this. Even Michael, who's shown terrible judgement with his children, hasn't continued to do balcony dangling.  They may not feel they were wrong and that the baby was "safe in their arms", but they recognize there are things they can't get away with in the public eye if they want to keep their children.

In one way I agree with you.  In another, I don't.  Both these men are powerful and masters at what they do.

Michael, doesn't believe what he's done is wrong (young boys).  Steve, believes that he's all-ominipudent (sp) and he would allow nothing to harm his children.

Both - are head-strong and feel they've done nothing wrong.  Both are in the headlines.  We'll just see who does what first.  :laff:

Actually, It’s quite the opposite, MsWings.

This man knows, probably better than any of us, how "one's life can be changed in a split second."

On a daily basis he is involved in situations where he knows quite well, a single mistake, a single slip up, a single lapse concentration can end in disaster and change his life forever.

This is the man who has spent his entire life capturing and caring for the most dangerous creatures on the planet. He knows the risks. Because he's risked them all is life.
He has been injured 'more times than you can poke a stick at'. Of course he knows how his life can change in a split second.
By his own accounts he has "respect and admiration and fear" for the many animals he creates new lives for.

And animals aside, Steve knows how lives can change in an instant. To say that he doesn't is completely lucicrous. Steve lost his mother in a car accident.
He knows how lives can change from one experience in a single second. He said so himself, that every time he puts his children in his car, he is scared. Because neither him nor his wife have any control over the traffic.

This man looks fear straight in the eyes every day of his life. He knows, better than anyone "how one's life can be forever changed in a split second."

I read nothing is happening to Steve but he was warned this wasnt a good idea. I would suggest if any of us had done the same our children would be taken away same with Jackson but then money talks either way i am glad he (Steve) was told this wasnt a good idea Cool

I can only imagine how sternly the Irwin's were "warned."

MM -  what I was said in a previous post about how Steve apparently hadn't had "one-second life changes" probably did sound quite ludicrious. I know, of course he has.  His life is in peril each and every time he steps near those animals.

Basically, having said that  - who better than Irwin, would know that an infant or child should not be put in such a perilous situation?  That was the crux of my anger at him and Terri.
