Four Dead, Three Girls Missing in Georgia

By HARRY R. WEBER, Associated Press Writer

RANGER, Ga. - Three adults and a 10-month-old baby were found shot to death early Thursday in two homes in rural Georgia, and three young girls were missing and feared kidnapped.

Gordon County Sheriff's spokesman Clent Harris said an arrest warrant for suspicion of murder had been issued for Jerry William Jones, 31, identified as the father of two of the missing girls and former stepfather of the third.

"We are very concerned for the safety of the three children," Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan said. He said it wasn't known whether Jones was still in the area, but authorities believe he has the girls with him.

The motive appeared to be jealousy, authorities said.

After the killings, Jones called his ex-wife, Melissa Peeler, the mother of the three missing girls and the slain infant, and told her that if she went to authorities, he would "start killing the kids one by one," Jones' former brother-in-law David O'Donnell said Thursday.

Peeler was in Oregon visiting her boyfriend at the time and had left the children with her parents, Tom and Nola Blaylock, and sister, Georgia Bradley, O'Donnell said.

The Blaylocks, Bradley, and Jones' own infant daughter Harley were all found slain Thursday morning, he said.

The murder scenes at the two homes in northwest Georgia showed that the killer was "very methodical," GBI spokesman John Bankhead said.

"This wasn't quick. He clearly took his time," Bankhead said.

A man and woman were killed at one home and a woman and an infant girl were slain at the other, he said. Some of the victims had multiple gunshot wounds, and the baby appeared to have been strangled, Keenan said.

It wasn't clear where the three missing girls had been staying.

Brittany Phelps, 10, Brandy Jones, 4, and Tammy Jones, 3, were last seen Wednesday at a home in Ranger, 55 miles north of Atlanta.

The four victims were killed the same day, sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., GBI spokeswoman Vicki Metz said.

O'Donnell said Jerry Williams Jones was constantly threatening violence and that Peeler had been trying to get away from him.

He described Jones as "a crazy person" and said Jones shot one of his horses five years ago after an argument. "He says all the time, he'll kill you, he'll kill me or whoever," O'Donnell said.

Jones had been in the county jail before, primarily for minor traffic charges, Gordon County Sheriff Jerry Davis said.

"We've had him in our jail and we're fixing to put him back in our jail. We're gonna put him back on the chain gang he was on," Davis said.

This is just awful...I know some of you don't believe in the death sentence, and that's fine we're each different, but I do, and I hope this guy gets it.

I agree Rhune.   I even think it's a shame that with the death penalty, he would go quickly.  I think he should be made to suffer.  I can't believe he killed this woman's entire family.

This hits too close to home.  I'm listening to the radio here at work and there is an announcement about every 30 minutes.

Ga. slayings suspect, 3 girls found alive

By HARRY R. WEBER
The Associated Press
1/9/2004, 1:42 a.m. CT

RANGER, Ga. (AP) -- A manhunt across the Southeast ended late Thursday when a tip led authorities to a jealous ex-husband who allegedly killed three former in-laws and his infant daughter, then fled with three girls.

The girls were found safe, and the suspect shot himself in the face after a police chase on Interstate 75 near the Tennessee line. Authorities said he was hospitalized in critical condition.

Jerry William Jones, 31, is accused of shooting the former in-laws to death and strangling his infant daughter Wednesday before fleeing with the girls in a stolen sport utility vehicle. Two of the girls are his daughters, and the other is a former stepdaughter.

The suspect has a long criminal history, including convictions for burglary and auto theft.

Jones called his ex-wife, Melissa Peeler, late Wednesday and told her of the killings, adding that he would "start killing the kids one by one" if she alerted authorities, said his former brother-in-law, David O'Donnell.

Peeler had left the children with her parents and sister before leaving for Oregon to visit her boyfriend over the Christmas holidays. She notified police after getting the phone call.

Peeler's parents, Tom and Nola Blaylock, were found shot to death in one home. In the other house, authorities found Jones' former sister-in-law, Georgia Bradley, shot to death, while Jones' 10-month-old daughter by Peeler, Harley, was apparently strangled.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said the crime scenes indicated that the killer was "very methodical."

"This wasn't quick. He clearly took his time," Bankhead said.

After a public alert was issued, police in Whitfield County got a tip that Jones' vehicle had been spotted headed north on Interstate 75 toward Tennessee.

Deputies spotted the car and saw the children, but Jones refused to pull over, GBI director Vernon Keenan said. Jones drove a short way off the interstate when a state trooper bumped the car's rear, crashing it into a telephone pole.

The 10-year-old got out, and officers saw Jones slump in the front seat. They pulled the other children out, one of them covered in Jones' blood. Jones and the girls were found about 50 miles north of where the killings occurred 24 hours earlier.

The girls were being kept overnight at a Chattanooga hospital. "They're being evaluated but I do not believe there are any serious injuries," said hospital spokeswoman Jan Powell.

Kathy O'Donnell, daughter of the slain in-laws, said she was relieved by news of Jones' capture. "It's so great. I'm glad they have him on his stomach handcuffed. And I am glad those babies are safe," she told The Associated Press.

Bankhead said investigators would compare the weapon found with Jones to determine if it was used in Wednesday's shootings.

Authorities said the motive appeared to be jealousy over his ex-wife visiting her new boyfriend.

O'Donnell said that Jones was constantly threatening violence and that Peeler had been trying to get away from him.

"He says all the time, he'll kill you, he'll kill me or whoever," O'Donnell said. "He's an idiot, just a crazy person."

The missing girls are Peeler and Jones' children — Brandy Jones, 4, and Tammy Jones, 3 — and Peeler's daughter from a previous relationship, Brittany Phelps, 10. Officials say Peeler and Jones were never legally married but had a common-law marriage.

Jones' mother and stepfather were killed in the 1996 ValuJet crash in the Florida Everglades, and O'Donnell said Jones got a substantial settlement.

"He blew the money almost as fast as he got it, mostly on drugs," O'Donnell said.

While I have had waivering feelings re death sentencing - in this case, which is grotesque - I agree with you and lakelady.

'We're just glad the nightmare is over for them'

We all are, but in truth,  these children and adults will be haunted for the rest of their lives with daymares and nightmares.  Many people develop a "survivor syndrome" and question why they lived through a particular crises and why didn't they act sooner to prevent such destruction (in this case, the strangled infant) - etc.

In the meantime, it's been reported the "creature/monster" below, will survive his self-inflicted injuries.  I'll admit that I hope he doesn't.

Police said Jones apparently cleaned up the grisly crime scene before fleeing.

In the meantime, prayers and profound condolences to the family and friends who went through such horrible trauma.

There have been so many horrible murders/murderers in the last 40-50 years....and fiction/non-fiction stories written about them.  I was trying to find some info or on Jerry William Jones, 31.  Instead, I found a reading list:

Breakfast at Tiffanys
The Executioners Song
Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders
Other Voices, Other Rooms
Music for Chameleons
The Grass Harp
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest

These aren't books I've read.  I'm wondering how they relate to Jerry William Jones?  I was thinking (of murderers) along the lines of:

Lee Harvey Oswald
Sirhan Sirhan
Charles Manson
Timothy McVeigh
Terry Nichols
Alex and Derek King
Ted Kaczynski
Mark David Chapman
David Berkowitz
Jeffrey Dahmer
Erik and Lyle Menendez
Colin Ferguson
Richard Speck
Joel Steinberg
Jack Henry Abbott

....when I clicked on The Smoking Gun.  Then I saw this:
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/mugshots/index.html    I'll have to 'fess up, I clicked on the mugshot of Ozzy Osbourne.  I don't remember him as a blonde.   Sorry, I digress.
