Disney Closes Animation Studio
Tue, Jan 13, 2004, 08:01 AM PT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Disney is shutting down its animation studio in Orlando, Florida.

Closing the studio will potentially leave nearly 260 animators out of work, according to CNN.

Although some employees may be offered posts at the Burbank feature animation studio, no specific numbers have been reported.

"This difficult decision was based on what is best strategically for our business in both the short and long term," says David Stainton, president of Walt Disney Feature Animation. "Having the entire animation group working together in Burbank under one roof will further enhance our filmmaking process."

Disney dominated hand-drawn animation feature films with classics such as 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Recently, the Florida studio released "Lilo & Stitch" and "Brother Bear."

Now, however, CGI-generated animation is enjoying its heyday with blockbusters such as Pixar's "Finding Nemo."

Disney currently has two computer-animated films in production at its Burbank Studio. Children's story "Chicken Little" is scheduled to be released next year. "A Day with Wilbur Robinson," based on William Joyce's book about a boy-genius, will begin animation in June.

Disney won't turn its back on the animation process that is responsible for the company's success, however. It reportedly has some hand-drawn projects in development.
