Countdown to Michael's Court Date

January 14, 2004
MICHAEL JACKSON is expected in court on Friday to respond to charges of child molestation. Watch ET for all the latest surprises and developments in the case!

Jackson ex-wife, DEBBIE ROWE, came out of hiding and was spotted at the chic eatery The Ivy in Los Angeles on Monday. The mother of Michael's two oldest children arrived just after 1:30 p.m. to have lunch with a pair of Michael's business associates. The appearance marks the first time the normally reclusive Rowe has been seen since this latest Jackson scandal broke. ET legal correspondent MARCIA CLARK weighs in:

"She was definitely sending a message to Michael," Clark tells our own MARY HART. "She wants everyone to know, 'I may not be able to cause any legal problems, I may not be able to bring you to court, I may not be able to get custody, but I can cause you big [public relations] problems,' and that's exactly what she did."

Sources close to the situation tell ET that Rowe met with Jackson's associates, DIETER WIESNER and MARK SCHAFFEL, reportedly over concerns about the nanny looking after the two children she had with Jackson and her alleged ties with the Nation of Islam. According to ET's source, Wiesner shared Rowe's position with Jackson's team of advisors and told them that if the situation doesn't change she will be forced to take steps to ensure change happens. Rowe has always stood by her ex husband, and now there's speculation she may be called to testify.

"If she is called to testify she could be a very explosive witness for the prosecution," says Clark.

In another part of the city on Monday, a dozen or more people in Jackson's organization, including leaders from the Nation of Islam, his lawyer MARK GERAGOS, accountants and managers, gathered for a meeting Monday at the Beverly Hills Hotel to discuss security, courtroom strategy and the pop star's money. Outside the hotel eyewitnesses spotted security guards from the Nation of Islam keeping watch. With the egos of these power players involved, Court TV's DIANE DIMOND says she believes the conflicts within Jackson's camp are about to boil over.

The ET Insider did a little digging on Jackson's power players and came up with this information about who they are:

CHARLES KOPPELMAN: A music industry giant who has guided the careers of stars like BILLY JOEL, BARBRA STREISAND and WILSON PHILLIPS over the last 40 years.

ALVIN MALNIK: A real estate developer who was once allegedly linked to mob boss MEYER LANSKY. Malnik was thought by many to have delivered the $3 million bail for Jackson -- although he denies it -- and a report claims Malnik and Koppelman recently made a $70 million payment for Jackson on a $350 million loan the singer took out. As of Tuesday calls to Koppelman's office were not returned by ET's deadline.

LEONARD MUHAMMAD: The son-in-law and chief of staff to Nation of Islam leader LOUIS FARRAKHAN, Muhammad denies rumors that the group is seeking control of Jackson's empire.

JOHN BRANCA: A music attorney said to have helped Jackson buy the lucrative BEATLES song catalog. Other clients have included THE BEACH BOYS and AEROSMITH.

MARK GERAGOS: Jackson's attorney is also lead defense attorney in the ongoing SCOTT PETERSON murder trial.

Meanwhile, between the fans and the reporters, it was near pandemonium outside the Jackson family compound in Encino, CA, Monday as friends and family gathered to show their support for Michael. Big brother JERMAINE declared Jackson is "1,000 percent innocent" of the child molestation charges he will be arraigned on in Santa Barbara County on Friday. He went on to say, "It is a true testament to Michael and his messages of love and inclusion that so many people of diverse backgrounds are traveling from around the globe to support him."

Those fans will be traveling a little further on Friday. At 4:00 a.m. supporters in Las Vegas, San Diego, Long Beach, the San Fernando Valley, Carson, Costa Mesa, Riverside, Los Angeles, Pasadena and Santa Monica will be boarding buses to caravan up to the Santa Maria courthouse where Jackson will face the judge for the first time. The supporters are planning to rally outside the courthouse to protest what some characterize as a vendetta against Jackson by District Attorney TOM SNEDDON. Sneddon has said the case against Michael is solid.

Michael is facing seven counts of child molestation and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent to a child under the age of 14. He is currently free on $3 million bail.

If you go to Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/home.jhtml  see this - click on the little grey arrow and you can see a video of MJ pulling himself to the top of his SUV.  No more problems with his shoulder now - is there?

The news of this fiasco is everywhere......

My sentiments exactly, Dixie.  It's ALL about MJ - and no mention of the children he's "alledgedly" molested.  I dunno - what's that saying?...."where there's smoke"....

Sure - MJ could be found not guilty - just like OJ.  But like OJ, he won't be found "innocent."  I'd take bets on that.
