Survey: Cell phone most hated, needed invention
Wednesday, January 21, 2004 Posted: 10:52 AM EST (1552 GMT)

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Love it. Hate it. Need it. Americans are ambivalent about their cell phones, TV sets and the like. They rely on such everyday technology, but it drives them nuts.

At the top of the list? The cell phone.

An annual Massachusetts Institute of Technology survey, known as the Lemelson-MIT Invention Index, found that among adults asked what invention they hate most but can't live without, 30 percent said the cell phone.

Alarm clocks were a close second, with 25 percent, followed by the television with 23 percent and razors with 14 percent. Microwave ovens, computers and answering machines also earned spots as detested technology.

The survey has been conducted for the past eight years to gauge public opinion toward inventions, inventors and technology.

"The interconnectedness you get from the cell phone is a very positive thing, and I think that's one of the most important things, the bringing together of people. The downside of that is that you sometimes want to be alone," said Lemelson Center Director Merton C. Flemings.

The random telephone survey of 1,023 adults and 500 teenagers was conducted Nov. 12-19 by Princeton, New Jersey-based Taylor Nelson Sofres Intersearch and was released Wednesday

Ninety-five percent of the adults surveyed felt that inventions had improved the quality of their lives.

A handy invention -- a two-way radio -- allowed Bob Dillon, 51, and his companion Deborah Bleau, 44, to keep tabs on Bleau's 12-year-old daughter, Kate, and Kate's two friends, as all five strolled through downtown Boston on a recent visit.

Bleau said it was hard to find fault with the technology keeping her in constant touch with her daughter, and Dillon did not find much to criticize about cell phones, other than their pesky habit of going off in public places.

But Dillon said he had a love-hate relationship with television. He ditched his television years ago. Now, he, Bleau, and Bleau's daughter have a TV in their Latham, New York, home, but it is used only for watching movies.

"It's not hooked into any kind of broadcast or anything like that, primarily because it's so invasive, and can take over your life," he said. "But it's a double-edged sword. I miss the History Channel."

Jaime Wasserman, 26, of Boston, walked through Quincy Market with her cell phone pressed to her ear.

"I love technology. There's really nothing that irritates me. I love it all. Computers, television," she said. "An alarm clock? You need an alarm clock. People who hate it are probably lazy people who just don't feel like getting up in the morning."

I have had a cell phone twice in my life. The first time was when they first came out and I only got one for the sake of traveling so much on the road in case of emergency.  However, I never used it and finally gave up the expense.  More recently, my ex fiance gave me one so we could keep in touch during the day.  Once again, and to his disappointment, I never used it.  Needless to say, I gave it back along with the engagement ring when we called it quits.

I just wish ppl wouldn't use them while driving.

I have a cell strictly for emergencies. It makes me more confident in traveling alone, or at night, which is good since I'm often on the road to and from my mom's these days. I don't understand the hate thing - mine has an off button, and stays off unless I need it.  Wink It recently came in handy for hubby. He had car trouble in the middle of nowhere, had the cell on him, called AAA to tow his car, called me to let me know why he was going to be so late. Wonderful.  Grin

I DO understand hating other people's cells... in movies, at dinner, while driving (as LL said) etc. People apparently think they'll miss some earth shattering news if they turn the thing off for awhile.  Roll Eyes

But why would anyone hate television, microwave ovens, computers and answering machines? My TV also has an off button, and rarely gets turned on til hubby gets home. A lot of nice people live in my computer.  Grin I wouldn't know how to cook without the nuker. And my answering maching saves me a LOT of trouble... it filters the calls I can do without.  Wink

Razor hate I totally understand. :laff:

I was at the grocery store the other day and was about to retrieve some milk when a woman nearby yelled out" Don't you DARE touch that - it's mine!" She was on her cellphone......me, I was on the floor.   Roll Eyes

I couldn't do without any of those things.  They all have on/off buttons - and mute, to boot.   Roll Eyes

It's pretty bad when the pastor of the church I attend has to tell the masses ( probably over 500 people) at the beginning of the service, "If you feel the need to have a cell phone on in this service, you need to just go ahead and leave now."

Yeah!  That is bad that people come into the house of the Lord with an activated cellphone.  And it's bad that the pastor has to remind them he won't tolerate the ringing.  What has happened to peoples brains.

If there is a family emergency going on - then don't go to church - or else take the hour or so to pray for healing.    Roll Eyes
