Crews had taken one set of circuits out for maintenance when another that was feeding customers failed, too. That left everybody from Queen St north to College and University east to Victoria in the dark. Among those affected: City Hall, Toronto Police Headquarters and the Eaton Centre and the U. of T.

Some hospitals are also affected, although they have emergency reserves.

The subway is running normally, but shuttle buses are running along the routes as a precaution. Stations including Queens Park , St. Patrick, Osgoode, Queen, Dundas and College on the Yonge-University line have emergency lighting on, but the trains are moving.

Hydro One explains it endured the equipment failure at its Terawley Substation around 11am and lost about 160,000 to 170,000 megawatts of load. The good news its not that serious. The bad is its likely going to be sometime in the mid-afternoon before the power is back on.

Officials dont believe the weather played any role in the blackout. But for some, it's a signal to leave early. Because for them, there's no power, there's no heat - and there's no point.
