Investigators have recovered the body of an 11-year-old Florida girl whose abduction was recorded by a car wash surveillance camera. "The body of Carlie Brucia has been found," Sarasota County Sheriff Bill Balkwill said this morning. The sheriff said a man already in custody on an alleged probation violation is under arrest in the girl's death.

Carlie's father said the police told him DNA evidence was found in car of the man they arrested, but did not know the specifics of the evidence.

Any word yet on how she died?  I'm sure it's gonna be sick but I would like to know.  This man needs to be hanged by his balls.   Sorry, but it needed to be said.

Tonight on our local news they quoted a source close to the investigation who said that there is evidence that Carlie fought her attacker very hard before she died.
Also that the rapist had been questioned the day she was killed when his car was found illegally parked along the interstate next to the area where her body was found.  The officer saw him exiting the wooded area and when questioned as to what he was doing, told the officer that he was relieving himself, so the officer let him go.
I can't imagine how this officer feels, or how awful it must have been for that poor little girl!

I don't see anything about rape yet on cnn, but in general there's not any reason other than that for a grown man to take a young girl like that and then kill her afterwards.  They don't invite you home for tea and then kill you.

Carlie Suspect Held Without Bond

Sunday, February 08, 2004
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,110740,00.html

SARASOTA, Fla. — The mechanic charged with kidnapping and killing an 11-year-old girl whose abduction was caught on a carwash surveillance camera was ordered held without bond on Saturday as the community formed a makeshift memorial outside the victim's home.

Joseph Peter Smith, who has been arrested at least 13 times in Florida since 1993, waived his first court appearance in the slaying of Carlie Brucia a day after her body was pulled from thick underbrush in a church parking lot.

The ranch house where Carlie lived was covered Saturday in white sheeting to protect the family's privacy. Dozens of mourners drifted by throughout the day, leaving flowers, small stuffed animals and notes.

Leticia Galvan of Sarasota left a string of purple rosary beads that she had been planning to give to one of her children. "I looked at the rosary and they are her (Carlie's) favorite color — purple," Galvan said.

Grief counselors gathered at McIntosh Middle School on Saturday to console Carlie's classmates. The slaying hit particularly hard because of the video capturing some of the last moments of the girl's life, said Robin Maranelli, head of student services for Sarasota County schools.

"It makes it very real ... we saw it happen," Maranelli said.

Investigators refused to say exactly how Carlie Brucia was killed or whether she had been raped. The arrest report said only that she died "as a result of homicidal violence."

Sheriff's officials and the medical examiner's office did not immediately return calls seeking comment on Saturday, and no police briefings were immediately planned.

"We now stand ready to complete our obligation, and assure you that he will pay the ultimate price for what he did to her," said Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Bell said Friday.

Smith, 37, is believed to be the man seen on the surveillance video in a mechanic's shirt with a name patch, leading Carlie away by the arm Feb. 1 as she walked home from a slumber party. Investigators said the man on the tape had tattoos on both forearms. Smith has many tattoos on his arms.

The kidnapping set off a frantic search for the girl, and the tape was beamed across the nation as Carlie's family and authorities pleaded for her safe return.

Investigators said they were led to Smith after a tipster identified him as the man in the video. Authorities said he had a Buick station wagon that was seen in the surveillance footage shortly before the kidnapping.

Smith served 17 months in prison in 2001 and 2002 for heroin possession and prescription drug fraud. Eight days after he got out, he was arrested for cocaine possession and placed on probation for three years. He also received probation for aggravated battery in 1993 and heroin charges in 1999.  :cry2:

Neighbors said Smith and his wife had separated recently and he had moved out of the house.

According to the arrest document, Smith told an unspecified witness Thursday he had kidnapped and murdered the girl.

Ed Dinyes, owner of the auto body shop where Smith worked, told The Miami Herald in Saturday's editions that Smith's mother planned to visit her son in jail.

"I talked with his mother and she told me she was going," said Dinyes, who said he's been friends with Smith for five years. "She said she just wanted five minutes with him."  (ED: Ohhh, I'd like just 5 seconds with him! :rifle: )

A public memorial service for Carlie was being planned Tuesday night outside Central Church of Christ.

About the story concerning the cop seeing Smith the night of the abduction--the Sarasota Herald Tribune said that story (which I think came out of NY) was unfounded.  The police deny that Smith was seen by an officer that night just off the highway near a wooded area.

I used to live in Sarasota and I know that:
1. The area in question is very close to a residential development and is not heavily wooded, and
2. The church is not right by the highway as some news stories have led readers to believe.
3.  National news states that the church was close to the car wash.  The Sarasota Herald Tribune says that the church is three miles away from the car wash.

If I can find the articles from the Herald Tribune that address this, I will post the link here.

Here is what I saw in the Sarasota Herald Tribune:

But sheriff's officials said they spent Saturday reviewing records and found nothing to substantiate the New York Post's claim that officers saw Smith last Sunday near the site where Carlie's body was later found, but let him go.

"It's absolutely not true," said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Chuck Lesaltato.

The Florida Highway Patrol also looked through its records and said a trooper pulled over a driver that night in that area, but it was not Smith.
