I just found this article!  I know this area is southwest from you but - I hope all is well and stays that way, with you and yours.

Mild Strain of Bird Flu Found in Southern Texas
Fri February 20, 2004 08:31 PM ET

GONZALES, Texas (Reuters) - Bird flu was found at a chicken farm in southern Texas, the fourth U.S. state affected by a mild strain of the virus not harmful to humans but devastating to poultry producers, state officials said on Friday.
The Texas Animal Health Commission said it had quarantined a flock of 7,000 chickens in Gonzales County near San Antonio after the birds tested positive for the H5N2 strain of avian influenza, a mild version of the deadly disease that has killed at least 22 people in Asia.

Those birds would likely be killed as a precaution to prevent the spread of the illness, Mark Michalke, a veterinarian for the Texas commission, said at a news conference in Gonzales.

Another 8,000 at a building on the same poultry farm could be destroyed even though no bird flu was detected in that flock, he said.

Michalke said chickens at poultry farms within a five-mile radius of the outbreak site had been tested, with no other cases found so far. On Saturday, testing would be expanded to a 10-mile radius, he said.

Unlike the H5N1 bird flu strain behind the Asian outbreak, the Texas infection posed "no health threat to humans and causes relatively low mortality in chickens," said Texas state veterinarian Bob Hillman. "The clinical manifestation, or signs of disease in chickens, indicates this virus is a low-pathogenic strain."

Industry officials said the infected Texas farm sold chickens to live poultry markets in Houston.

The illness was found after the owner of the poultry farm noticed that a higher rate of chickens located in one of buildings was dying and he took some of the birds to a Texas A&M laboratory for testing, officials said.

They said the illness appears from time to time and last struck a Gonzales County flock in 2002.

Bird flu can be rapidly spread by farm equipment, feed delivery trucks, shoes and clothing, and the wind. Texas ranked No. 6 in U.S. chicken production in 2002 with 2.88 billion pounds (1.3 billion kg), according to industry figures.

Some 30 countries have banned imports of some or all U.S. poultry since the discovery of a similar mild strain of bird flu in Delaware two weeks ago. Another case was found at a large poultry farm in Pennsylvania, and the infection also surfaced in New Jersey markets that sell live chickens.

On Thursday, Canada discovered a mild strain of bird flu at a chicken farm in British Columbia.
Russia, the top U.S. poultry buyer, issued a temporary ban on Texas chickens early on Friday, even before the bird flu infection was publicly announced.

There was no sign that the Texas infection came from diseased birds in Delaware, Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

"At present, there does not appear to be any connection between the cases on the East Coast and the infected flock in Texas," Hillman said.

Farmers fear the disease because sick birds produce fewer eggs, which are often misshapen or soft-shelled. The virus, commonly found in ducks and other migratory birds, is spread through the birds' feces or mouth secretions.

Despite the discovery of bird flu in four states in two weeks, U.S. industry officials remained confident the virus would be contained quickly. "This will have a minimal impact, if any," said Richard Lobb, spokesman for the National Chicken Council.

Chicago Board of Trade corn futures ended mixed on Friday, after setting a 6-1/4 year top, on worries of reduced feed demand. The futures contract for May closed down 1/4 cent at $2.91 per bushel.

Scientists are alarmed at the Asian outbreak, which indicates the deadly strain of bird flu can spread between species. Two domestic cats in Thailand died of the same disease.

The United States has not had a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu, as the one in Asia, for 20 years, the USDA says.

Between this & West Nile, our feathered friends are sure having a hard run. Our wild birds were hit pretty hard with the West Nile virus last year, it really took a toll on last year's new generation of sparrows & finches. All the more reason to give them an extra hand this winter with seeds, water & suet.

Sorry I know this was a little off topic.  Let's all pray we don't have a resurgence of SARS.
