Michael Jackson Possibly Faces Grand Jury Thu, Mar 11, 2004, 08:03 AM PT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - A grand jury will convene in Santa Barbara in possible connection with the Michael Jackson molestation case. There is no indication if the panel will actually be investigating the case since grand jury business is confidential. According to the AP, a spokesperson for District Attorney Tom Sneddon says, "[The] office convenes a grand jury every quarter. So this could be considered part of their standard activity. We can't say." Using a grand jury can secure an indictment, bypassing a potentially long preliminary hearing with public testimony. A preliminary hearing has been set previously for Friday, April 2, to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial. Neither of Jackson's lawyers, Mark Geragos and Benjamin Brafman, could comment, heeding a judge's gag order. Larry Feldman, an attorney who once represented the pop star, says he has not been contacted regarding a grand jury. A media frenzy has surrounded the already popular Jackson ever since a raid on his Neverland ranch yielded child molestation charges. Jackson is charged with seven counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 and two counts of giving the child an "intoxicating agent," reportedly wine. He's free on $3 million bail. Jackson, 45, became an international star with albums such as "Thriller" and "Bad." He has also acted in several films including 1978's "The Wiz" as the loose-limbed Scarecrow and recently had a cameo as Agent M in 2002's "Men in Black II."
