Brazilian Pastor Dies Watching 'Passion'

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" has claimed another life.  
 
Jose Geraldo Soares, a Brazilian pastor who had booked two theaters in a Belo Horizonte shopping mall to watch the film with his family and church congregation, died of an apparent heart attack while screening the film on Sunday, March 21, reports Reuters.  
 
Halfway through the movie, Soares' wife noticed that the 43-year-old pastor wasn't awake when he didn't reply to a comment she made to him during the film. A doctor in the audience tended Soares, but he was already dead.  
 
"He was calmly watching the movie next to his wife," says Amauri Costa, a family friend.  
 
Soares' funeral was held on Monday.  
 
Soares is the second person to die while watching "The Passion." Peggy Law, 56, died of a heart attack on Feb. 25 in Wichita, Kansas while watching film's climactic crucifixion scene. She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.  
 
"Passion" has been criticized for its extreme, graphic depiction of Jesus' suffering including extended whipping scenes in which his flesh is torn away. Detractors say the scene borders on "violent pornography."  
 
"Passion," starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus in the last 12 hours of his life, recently passed the $300 million mark for worldwide ticket sales.

Thats sad... I cant believe it really had that impact. I guess other gross movies dont get casualties because they are mostly made for teens, like suspense thrillers.. "Passion" gets the interests of a lot of adults which are more prone to heart attack... so sad.

If he had died watching a Disney Movie most would have just said his heart was weak ect etc. I doubt movie has any impact on his death just makes good print

I guess you have a point... but I do agree that Passion was kinda sick even for generation X who are used to those kind of things.

So was The Exorcist, Chainsaw Masacare,Original Dawn of the Dead etc etc but we never read about people dieing.

Maybe the idea of Jesus Christ - whom most people look upon, getting mutilated kills them. He died for us, and so they die for Him.

The two people (that I know of) who expired while watching The Passion, more than likely had health problems.  As David said - "good print" for the media to give these deaths press.
