Police: Evidence doesn't support abduction claim
Search for suspect dropped
Friday, April 2, 2004 Posted: 2:46 PM EST (1946 GMT)

MADISON, Wisconsin (CNN) -- Madison police said they have stopped the search for a suspect in the case of a University of Wisconsin honor student who said she was taken at knifepoint from outside her apartment Saturday, Assistant Police Chief Noble Wray said at a Friday news conference.

"Due to continuing inconsistences ... and a lack of any evidence to support her allegations ... we do not believe that there is a supect at large, period," Wray said.

Wray cited inconsistencies in 20-year-old Audrey Seiler's story that led police to question her claim. For example, the honor student told told police that her captor used duct tape, rope, cold medicine, a gun and a knife to keep her under his control.

Although those items were found in the marsh where she was located, buttressing her account, police obtained videotape Thursday that showed Seiler entering a Madison store and buying those items, he said.

Also, during the time she said she was held captive, two witnesses reported having seen her apparently "walking freely" in different areas of the city, he said.

In addition, during those four days she said she was held captive, someone used her computer to look up a five-day weather forecast and search wooded areas in and around Madison, he said.

Asked whether authorities were planning to press charges against her, Wray said, "I think it's a little bit early for us to say that. We still need to talk to all the detectives."

Earlier Friday, Wray said police asked Seiler about apparent inconsistencies among the physical evidence, her statements to police and those of other witnesses. Seiler then said the abduction had taken place in a different location, according to Wray.

She was found Wednesday and had last been seen leaving her apartment at 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Seiler told police she was abducted at knifepoint by a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall, and last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black hat and jeans.

A security camera recorded Seiler leaving her apartment early Saturday. She left her apartment door open, with her coat and purse inside, police said.

Police spokesman Larry Kamholz said earlier in the week that Seiler's disappearance puzzled investigators because there was no sign of foul play.

In February, Seiler told police she was attacked from behind and knocked unconscious while walking alone outside after midnight. She said she woke up behind a nearby building but wasn't robbed or otherwise hurt, police said. No one was arrested.

Shortly after Seiler was found Wednesday, authorities sealed off the area and began searching streets, parking lots and nearby woods in an unsuccessful attempt to locate a suspect.

Hundreds of volunteers, including many from Seiler's hometown of Rockford, Minnesota, helped search this week.

Seiler was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, and her parents expressed relief that the ordeal was over.

hmmm... so if it is indeed Seiler's doing, what is she tryin to prove? or does she just need time to "disappear" with her bf? Man, if people finds out she bamboozled them, she is in deep deep trouble.

I think that this is just a sad, sad story.  I feel terrible for Audrey that she felt the need to concoct such an elaborate story, just for attention, but at the same times, if she really wanted to "be alone" as otehr news reports said, there are places she could have gone to get help.  This is going to cost tax payers approximately $70,000, which would be understandable if it was a legitimate search and rescue.  However, I really hope that Audrey gets the help she needs, as I really think that this action serves a cry for help anad that she gets it.

Yeah, I'd say this is about as loud of a cry for therapy as I've heard in awhile.

I think it's going to cost considerably more than that.

I've had several theories as to why she did what she did.  None of them come out right - except that she might be pyschotic.  I pray someone gets help for her.

I just hope her parents don't receive a bill for all that surveillance.   :yikes:

As a college student, I think she's old enough to get the bill herself.  I think that's a marvelous idea, actually. :devilish:
