A 'Love Boat' Wedding
Entertainment Tonight

April 6, 2004
"Love Boat" princess JILL WHELAN tied the knot Friday, April 2, on the back fantail of the newest ship in the Princess Cruise Line, overlooking Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Her TV dad, ship's captain GAVIN MacLEOD, and "Love Boat" doctor BERNIE KOPELL were on-board to wish her well.

The groom was Whelan's longtime friend MICHAEL CHAYKOWSKY, with whom she became romantically involved New Year's 2003. Originally, the two met 13 years ago at Madison Garden in New York City, where they both worked.

"It is a great story because I was single and Michael wasn't, and then I ended up getting married and Michael got divorced, and then I got divorced, but Michael got engaged to someone else, and then he got unengaged and called me this last New Year's," Whelan, 37, explains. "I said, 'You need a trip to California.' We were engaged that following April 26."

As it was her second wedding, the bride wore a non-traditional MIKA INATOME pink gown with an overlay of white chiffon, studded with Swarovski Crystals and pearls. Her wedding ring was designed and given to her by Jewelry Television, a home shopping channel, that features Whelan's own line of jewelry: The Bon Voyage Collection: Resort Wear Jewelry for the Seasoned Traveler.

Present were 138 guests, 99 of whom stayed on the ship to take the seven-day cruise to Cozumel, Jamaica, Princess Cay and the Grand Cayman. The wedding party of seven bridesmaids and groomsmen included Whelan's brother, sister and son Harrison, and Michael's son and father.

Following her wedding, Whelan christened the new ship, the Caribbean Princess, the largest in the fleet. "I have the incredible honor of being able to christen the ship right after my wedding, so I will become a bride, a wife and a godmother all in the same hour," the former Vicki Stubing says. "I am sitting in some incredible company: QUEEN ELIZABETH, PRINCESS DIANA, OLIVIA DeHAVILLAND, JANE SEYMOUR and now me. I think I am the first bride to christen a ship."

Music played an important part in the ceremony. Whelan walked down the aisle to a medley of "Somewhere in Time" and "Somewhere Out There," and her recessional was "Everlasting Love." Whelan and Chaykowsky's first dance as husband and wife was "At Last," made famous by ETTA JAMES, but the recording used for the wedding was by PHOEBE SNOW.

And while it was Whelan's son Harrison who walked her down the aisle, she says of her "Love Boat" friends, "It would be strange for me if they weren't here. Bernie's children and my child play tennis together, so we are very close, and Gavin is like another dad to me."

Why is it "a great story' when marrages are broken up?  It saddens me.  This is why 50 % of all marrages end in divorce.  That is just ading to the problem.  "longtime friend MICHAEL CHAYKOWSKY, with whom she became romantically" Were either of them still married at that time?  The ship should be called USS Homewrecker.

JMO, sorry.

Well as long as they are happy. Sometimes bad things happen to make way for a better life... Better that than stay married with an unhappy life. But I think people should think twice before jumping to things like marriage. I remember "Love Boat", my mum used to watch it a lot when I was a kid...
