MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -- Italian scientists have found a matching image of a man's face and possibly his hands on the back of the Turin shroud, believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, one of the researchers said on Thursday.

The discovery that the ghostly image on the back of the linen cloth matches the face that adorns the front is likely to reignite debate over whether the shroud is genuine or a skilful medieval fraud.

"The fact that the image is two-sided makes any forgery difficult," Professor Giulio Fanti of the University of Padua told Reuters.

The findings of Fanti and Roberto Maggiolo, both from the university's department of mechanical engineering, were published this week by a journal of the Institute of Physics in London.

Fanti said the discovery would support those who maintain the cloth is genuine.

The shroud, one of Christianity's most sacred but most disputed relics, is a piece of linen some 14 feet long and 3 feet 7 inches wide.

As the years go by, I grow more dubious about this shroud being authentic. If that piece of cloth has been inspected thread by thread, how is it then, that a face is just now being seen on the backside?

And why has so much important been put on this thing? It seems that it's worshipped as some kind of idol - that doesn't work for me, but the first two commandments of the Ten Commandments do.

The Commandments of Exodus 20 (verses 3-17) are:

1. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

2. "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

well.. I don't actually know if I would believe if this shroud is authentic or not... I am a catholic but I don't idolize this relic... plus as what the researchers found that carbon-dating shows that it was from the 13th or 14th century... so I would think that it maybe a hoax...

but anyways... whether it is authentic or not.. i believe that it is one of the most important relics of the Christian world...

Especially when you have items dated longer than that.
That's a slippery slope waiting to happen!!!

Correct me if I am wrong. The shroud wrapped Jesus up while in the tomb (as tradition tells us). I would imagine that it would be drenched with 1st century embalming fluids (spices, herbs, oils, fragrences, etc.)

So what if this is the real shroud... Would that help the Christian faith? Probably not. Seeing God (essentially) did not help Adam, Lucifer, Judas, the Israelites in the wilderness, etc. etc. (they all saw and/or walked with God) Last time I heard, faith is things unseen...

Funny thing Jesus came from Mideast as we all know yet every drawing of him gives him an European look! Our conception of how Jesus looks is probably WAY off! So we are told this is cloth that the dead Jesus was wrapped in what evidence is there that Jesus WAS indeed wrapped in this cloth or wasnt? It is an excellent tool for faith and used for just that which is fine with this Christain. Carbon dating does show cloth to be too young but who knows! I for one dont care if it is or isnt since noone truly knows what Jesus looked like he certainly couldnt have looked so European! I for one dont care what he looked like or was wrapped in at death prior to reserection. What I care about is his teachings!

Damn right david! I often wondered that one. Arabic look he should have, like what we always see on TV like bin laden... but what we have is a Beatles member! I guess most of the Bible and such records/drawings are all not exact, people just take it too literally sometimes and believe what was first "released" such as the face of Jesus. Its all about the teachings as david said, and that too, we must not take too literally.

I imagine that he looked alot like Bin Laden... OT Scripture says that he looked plain and that he had beard (since prophecy said that they would pluck it)
I would imagine that he was well built and rough featured since he was a carpenter. But in the end, does it matter?

well.. maybe to share.. this morning in the mass, today's Gospel states.. (partly) from the Book of John... The Gospel states of the night of Christ's resurrection where the apostles met in a hiding place.. and Jesus appeared to them... anyways the last part states..."there are a lot thing Jesus did with his apostles that are not written in this book (Bible)... what was written were all that is needed for you to believe in Him..' so our priest tells us that the other details regarding Jesus.. like His features, appearance, habits, etc.. doesn't matter but what matters is who He is.. and what He has taught... thus.. even if the Catholic Church find something connected to Jesus will not be a big matter to affect our faith... because as Jesus has said to the apostles in the Gospel... 'blessed is he who believe yet have not seen..' Grin

but maybe on the Beatle member look... I think.. maybe they have depicted his looks or his hair was maybe during that time people have their hair long because barber shops and parlors are not commonplace yet... Grin
