McDonald's tweaks menu, adds burger without a bun, pedometers

WASHINGTON (AFP) - McDonald's Corp. said that it plans to add low-carbohydrate options, low-calorie adult "Happy Meals" and pedometers to its menu as part of its long-range strategy to help Americans watch their waistlines.

The fast-food giant will roll out an adult version of its children's Happy Meal, May 6. Customers will get a salad, bottled water, and a pedometer for about five dollars, a spokeswoman said.

In a nod to the low-carbohydrate diet craze sweeping the nation, the chain will also allow customers to order their burgers or fish or chicken sandwiches without buns, beginning this month.

By mid-summer, parents will also be able to order peeled apple slices with a low-fat caramel dipping sauce, pure apple juice, low-fat white and chocolate drinks for their children.

"We want to help adults achieve the right balance between their daily calorie intake and physical activity, and to help children adopt active, balanced lifestyle habits early on," said Michael Roberts, president, McDonald's USA in a statement.

The changes come as the chain struggles to revamp its image and offerings amid growing concern about the United States' exploding obesity rates and the attendant medical complications, including diabetes and heart disease.

The chain said it expects to sell 15 million pedometers in the next six months.

Without a bun huh? Hmmm... so just eat it directly or with a fork?

I doubt those will get here in McDonalds Philippines... though we have a burger steak, served with gravy and rice... do you guys have it there too? Since rice is a daily part of a Filipino meal, but I dont know in US.

I've never heard of one here, but I have noticed that McDonalds does try to have a somewhat varied menu depending on the area in the past.  For example, I used to order fish and chips in Seattle at McDonalds.

yup.. i believe mcdonalds introduce their regular meals plus additional meals that caters the taste of the country where they branch out... like i heard that the burger meals in Thailand are spicy.. and in Singapore have a different twist as well... here in the Philippines they offered their meals with rice (like the RiceBurger, burgersteak, McChicken with Rice) simply because Filipinos don't like eating without rice... and maybe in India they could have offered it with curry or something... Grin

and i think there are McDo meals in the US that are not offered here locally and the size of the meals are also not the same.... and i think this is not solely with McDonald's, cause BurgerKing, Wendy's also have some different meals locally...

Hardees (Carl Jrs for you guys on the west coast) and Burger King already had a bunless- hamburger....  I had one, it was good, but kinda messy:  wrapped in lettuce.  My dad is on the Atkins, he went to order one and they asked him if he wanted a value meal.  He asked what came with it, they said fries and a coke....   How funny is that?
