Gwyneth Paltrow Names New Baby Girl Apple
May 15, 4:23 PM EST

The Associated Press

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow has given birth to her first child, a baby girl named Apple Blythe Alison Martin. The baby, weighing 9 pounds, 11 ounces, was born in a London hospital Friday after what Paltrow's husband, Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, described as "a long labor." Mother and daughter were said to be doing fine.

"We are 900 miles over the moon, and we'd like to thank everyone at the hospital who have looked after us amazingly," Martin said in a statement released by spokesman Murray Chalmers.

Paltrow announced last December that she and Martin, 26, were expecting a baby.

The couple, who have been scrupulous about maintaining their privacy, were wed in December during a private ceremony in Santa Barbara.

The 31-year-old actress, who won an Oscar for "Shakespeare in Love," is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and the late director Bruce Paltrow.

She hinted during an interview with W magazine earlier this year that she may do as her mother did and put her acting career on hold to raise her child.

"My mother turned down every fantastic movie there was," said Paltrow, who starred opposite her mother in last year's film "Sylvia." "She turned down these amazing things that would have made her a huge movie star."

LOL

You know, when you have a screwey first name you have two choices in life.  There's about a 2% chance that your child will be the collest kid in school, and a 98% chance that your child will be picked on, humiliated and tortured for their name...picking something like "apple" is just cruel.  The fact that her parents are famous may help boost those odds a bit, but she'll have to be really confident and charismatic as well...

Looks like she went to the Frank Zappa/Grace Slick school of child naming

Zappa: Dweezil, Moon Unit, Ahkmed

Slick: God

Let's not forget the River Phoenix family. I forget most of them but they are all batty like his was.

As to worlds worst name that would fall on a guy I went to High School with:  Richard Meunch (last name pronounced Munch). Those of us from the Nixon era will appreciate that one.  Grin

Borad, just for the occasion, I did some research on the Phoenix family.

First off, their last name was Bottom.
First came River Jude Bottom
Next was Rain Joan of Arc Bottom (at age 11 she changed her name to Rainbow)
Then it was Joaquin Rafael Bottom
Then the 2nd sister, Libertad Mariposa Bottom
Last, another sister, Summer Joy Bottom.

In 1979, John Bottom changed the family name to Phoenix.

Hopefully they will call her Allison, but Apple?
What had those two been smokin'?
My daughter being a teacher, says to never name your child a first name you don't want it called, for that is what teachers look at first, the first name!
Can't you see this little one coming home in tears for someone called her apple core?

You would have to be on DRUGS if you want to call your child after fruit
and she could be called worse than apple core.

Well, here it's okay to have a name Apple (I know someone who is named apple).

I have a classmate in High School named Mzarriz.

And my name! I was named after the Pope by my late great grandmother. Hey, I'm not ashamed of my name, but some people are just mean.

Anyways, I'm not alone. I have a classmate in my elementary days who also has the name "John Paul". And they don't call me names anymore.  Wink

The Mommy Returns
Gwyneth's big Apple love. Plus, romance updates on Paris and Nicky

by Kat Giantis
MSN Entertainment
Aug. 30, 2004

Geez, you name your bouncing baby girl after a tasty and nutritious fruit and suddenly all hell breaks loose. Gwyneth Paltrow, back in the public eye for the first time since giving birth in May, says she's still confused over why her decision to dub her daughter Apple raised a ruckus.

"It conjured such a lovely picture for me -- you know, apples are so sweet and they're wholesome and it's biblical," she told Oprah Winfrey on Thursday, revealing it was husband Chris Martin who first suggested the appellation.

"And I just thought it sounded so lovely and ... clean. And I just thought, 'Perfect!'"

Not so lovely were the nearly three days of labor she endured before Apple made her grand entrance, although Gwyn's quite pleased with the end result. "I never could have anticipated the feeling ... it was like a tightly closed flower that just opened the second that I saw her," the Oscar winner gushes to Access Hollywood. "She just makes me so happy. It's just unbelievable."

Paltrow is so content these days she's not even stressed about losing the last little bit of baby weight. "I'm 10 pounds over what I normally weigh and I really like it. I mean, most of it's probably in my boobs -- I don't know what to do with them; they're taking over my life!" she tells Entertainment Tonight (the actress showed off her enhanced figure in a low-cut shirt at MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday night).

While Gwyneth has nixed dieting because she's breastfeeding, she has returned to her yoga and Pilates regimen and is sensibly taking off the pounds. And in an admission that many new moms will appreciate, she divulges that she briefly wore a girdle to suck in her belly when out in public.

Paltrow also says that she and Chris are flying solo as parents and have opted against getting a nanny, though she does have some temporary help while she promotes the retro sci-fi flick "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" (it's good -- go see it), which lands in theaters Sept. 17.
