School Warns Parents To Watch Children's Online Activity
Some Teenagers Sharing Personal Information Online

POSTED: 12:47 pm CDT May 27, 2004
UPDATED: 1:04 pm CDT May 27, 2004

LIBERTY, Mo. -- Just in time for summer vacation, the Liberty School District sent home a warning for parents to be aware of what their children are doing online.

Meredith Schneider, 14, is a pretty computer savvy teen. She likes to chat with her friends online.

"It's not very safe what I've been seeing," Schneider told KMBC's Natalie Moultrie.

Schneider said that she does not like how much information some teens are willing to share on Web sites, like Xanga, which allow teens to set up personal Web journals.

"I've seen people write what subdivision they live in and their address. I don't think it's right at all," Schneider said.

Neither does Liberty school resource officer Robert Kumpost. He recently sent home a note to parents warning them to be aware of what type of information teens are sharing on Web sites.

Moultrie said that Kumpost first got word of the Web site from a concerned parent, who found out her daughter was sharing too much personal information on the site.

"She just said her daughter got unsolicited e-mail from strangers reading her journal. There was nothing in the content that was bad, just the fact that some stranger got information and contacted her that way," Kumpost said.

Personal Web sites are blocked in most schools so kids are logging on at home -- sometimes talking about when families go on vacation, where they're going, and even where they live.

"It's just information these people can use to go in and burglarize homes," Kumpost said.

Schneider said that Xanga is not the only site teenagers use a lot, but she knows they can be safe and fun if teens remember all they share on the World Wide Web is not private.

Kumpost suggests parents talk to their children to find out what type of Web sites they are visiting and what kind of information they are sharing. He also said that it is a good idea for teenagers to use a fake name or nickname and leave out any identifiable information when sharing information online.

I try to watch constantly. you know what has opened my eyes is playing the google image search! my kids use that for homework and reports some times. Some of the pics on there when you type in an innocent word are scary.  kathy

We have all our computers in one central location, and there is just no real "privacy" in surfing the web.  One parent is always home.  At this age it's not much risk with my kids who are mostly surfing nick jr and cartoon network websites, but I know as they get older it will start to be more of a concern.

I just recently put a set up upstairs for the kids this is why i'm nervous now. I did try to put a tad of fear in telling them i would be checking to see what sites they have been on. that there are ways to do this.  i don't see any signs of wandering off kiddy sights yet. my 12 yr old is obsessed with the neopets site. she freaks out "she has to feed her neopets" if she cant get her brother off. lol kabi
