I just noticed that our Code Amber Banner link now has a link to Sex Offender Rgistries by state in the US on their page.   Worth checking out if you're a parent. I have brought this up several times now, but in case anyone missed it, most states do NOT notify you if a registered sex offender moves into your neighborhood.  They require you to look the information up yourself and in most cases provide a website with addresses and photos.  The nearest convicted child molester lives 3 blocks from my house.  How close is the nearest one to your house?  Make sure you know and know what they look like!

It differes from state to state and possibly from city to city.  Most states have a "passive" notification system which means they keep the information on file, but they require you to do the footwork on contacting them or looking it up.  Thankfully most keep an up to date website in this day and age.  It is unlikely that you will be actively notified if a registered offender moves into your neighborhood, so you have to make the effort to seek that information out.  I pretty much remind everyone in here about every 3 months, which is about how often I go look up the local registry.  People move around, pictures get updated as looks change, and sometimes more people are added to the list.  As a parent you have to know what's around you that poses a danger to your child and this is just one of those things.

I suppose some states might have that, but I know in my state, they just have everything online and I can do various searches like by zip code or by city, etc.

I checked mine out a few months back when I was going through my real estate licensing.

I found 5 in my small town of 2400. 2 lived together and 3 were on the road between my home and the grade school my daughter goes to. Makes me think twice about letting her walk to school when she gets older.

We have one on street behind us which is NOT on the way to school thank God but kids all walk together and with other kids with stern instructions on what to do if approached by ANYONE! I might add that Sex Offender doesnt mean Pedophile! I am NOT happy about any Sex Offender living behine my house but I would like to know if this is a rapist or child molestor. Any adult (18 or over) who has Sex (consenual included) with a minor (anyone under 18 even by a day) gets classified a "Sex Offender" I tried to get more info on person on next street but couldnt get more info other than Sex Offender!

"with a minor (anyone under 28 even by a day)"

Im just curious David is that the right age or did you mean 18? It's 18 here in Canada. And if the age is correct that would mean that I was a sexual offender for 9 years.   Shocked
