Bertuzzi charged with assault!

VANCOUVER (CP) - Vancouver Canucks star Todd Bertuzzi was charged Thursday with assault causing bodily harm for his on-ice attack on Colorado Avalanche player Steve Moore that left Moore with neck injuries.

The charges were announced by the criminal justice branch of the Ministry of the Attorney General after an investigation that lasted four months.

The attack was witnessed by over 18,000 people at the arena and has been shown repeatedly in television clips broadcast across North America and Europe.

Bertuzzi has been ordered to appear in provincial court July 9.

The March 8 incident left Moore, 25, in hospital with three fractured vertebrae - two cervical vertebrae and a fracture of the transverse process in a thoracic vertebra - facial cuts, significant post-concussion symptoms and "significant amnesia."

Nerves in the neck area were also stretched by the blow.

Doctors say it's not known when, or if, the Windsor, Ont., native can play hockey again.

The National Hockey League suspended Bertuzzi, 29, for the final 13 games of the regular season and Vancouver's seven playoff games.

The suspension cost Bertuzzi $501,926.39 US of his $6.8-million salary. The Canucks were also fined $250,000.

Bertuzzi was also left off Team Canada's roster for this fall's World Cup.

His indefinite suspension won't be lifted until NHL commissioner Gary Bettman holds a hearing with the Canuck star. During a May 25 interview, Bettman gave no indication when that meeting might occur.

Bertuzzi's only public comment was a tearful apology two nights after the incident occurred.

"Steve, I just want to apologize for what happened out there," said the Sudbury, Ont., native. "I had no intention of hurting you. I feel awful for what transpired."

"I don't play the game that way," he added. "I'm not a mean-spirited person. I'm sorry for what happened."

Bertuzzi hired Len Doust, one of B.C.'s most high-profile counsels, to represent him.

During the game, with the Avs already leading 8-2, the six-foot-three, 235-pound Bertuzzi grabbed Moore from behind at 8:41 of the third period.

He sucker-punched the Avs forward on the side of his head and then landed on top of the six-foot-two, 205-pound Moore, driving his head into the ice.

The attack was seen as retaliation for a hit Moore put on Vancouver star Markus Naslund that left the Canuck captain with a concussion and sidelined him for three games.

There is precedent for a hockey player facing charges for his on-ice action.

Most recently Marty McSorely, then with the Boston Bruins, was charged with assault after bashing then-Canuck Donald Brashear with a stick to the head in February 2000.

McSorley was convicted of assault with a weapon and given an 18-month conditional discharge.

Bertuzzi had 17 goals, 43 assists and 122 penalty minutes in 69 games this season.

Well,

Steve is done with his 14 weeks of wearing a neckbrace. He is now in the rehabilitaion stage. Is there any doubt that Steve will be playing again next year?

YES!, the only way that Steve won't play next year is if he decides to sue Todd for damages, then it would strengthen his case if he said he couldnt play.

I doubt this will happen, it wouldnt make sense when the AP is saying that he is rehabbing well now.

One thing that drove me nuts about this whole scenerio was how the press jumped on the "Broken Neck" thing!

For those that don't know, there is a huge difference between a broken neck and a fractured neck;
Broken neck = 80% chance of dying from it, most people left with partial paralyst at least.
Fractured neck= no chance of dying and an easy road to recovery, good chance that his neck will never be as strong but not to the point of continuous pain.

Oh well, I hope that Bert makes it thru the witch hunt okay. I really hope Betman and Cambell loose thier jobs in the next couple years.

It's a shame any of it happened at all.  This is why I don't want my own sons to play hockey.

You sure don't see that kind of behavior and other issues that cause arrests with pro golfers either.  Most all of them are gentlemen.  What is the difference?  Maybe because they use control of emotions?

Our 11 yr old grandson plays hockey, I worry about him being hurt by a larger boy.  We pray not!

We can only hope and pray Steve has a full recovery.

I don't see why this type of behavior is tolerated by officials and encouraged by fans in the NHL. I love hockey but I'd much rather watch college and Olympic play. Strategy as opposed to brute force is the primary game plan.

As a huge fan of Hockey, I feel the need to clear a few things up about the Bertuzzi/Moore issue.

First of all Insane you mentioned how this shouldnt be tolerated. I would say that it isnt being tolerated at all. The league and fans won't put up with stupid revenge driven attacks. The NHL has given Todd Bertuzzi the longest suspension ever, as well they have fined both Bertuzzi and the Canucks hockey team.

I personally feel that the suspension was way too long (14 games, all of the playoffs and a review at the beginning of next season to decide when he can come back) I say this because as with any diciplinary decision, the decision should allways be somewhat based on any precidents. In the case of the Bertuzzi sucker punch there are plenty of precidents, the longest of which was 12 games total.

When this took place, imediately after the Canadian press asked thier readers/watchers/subscribers what they thought should be the penalty if any, for what Bertuzzi did? allmost 100% would tell you that he needed to be punished for his actions. That being said, when the verdict came down...... most fans knew that the NHL had given into the presure from the American Press.

This isn't the first time that this has happened, the NHL has a long record of doing whatever it takes to keep the American Press saying nothing but nice things about the sport. Betman (NHL President) has two main goals, 1. keep the players playing and resolve the strike issues and 2. make make it so Hockey has a larger piece of the American viewership.

I definatly think that Bertuzzi has allready payed a huge debt and to now charge him and consider not letting him play ever! is just not right.

NOTE TO PONDER;  exactly 2 weeks after the bertuzzi incident, a Boston Bruin winger sucker punched a player on the opposing team. Knocking him out in the process. Lucky for the player he didnt have 4 people land on him when he fell, so no damage occured to his back................. how long was he suspnded for? how much was he fined? ..................................

NOTHING, NADA

I'm with I4S.  To put it into perspective, imagine if players of other sports, take Baseball for example (since it's in the season) routinely sucker punched members of the other team in the back of the head as they were passing round the bases.  It's a shame that it's tolerated at all.

true dat Kelby   Smiley

also please dont think that this is a daily, weekly or even monthly occuarnce in hockey, because it is not. Yes there are fights on a regular basis. Those fights tend to be face to face, and these sucker punch, sillyass, moran moves are few and far between.

And since we are talking about baseball, you gotta believe that these guys are just dying to get into one good fight...  Smiley  look at all the dugout clearing  *fights*. I tell ya they need to have a good BrooHawHaw (cdn term).

Just teasing, hockey is the most physical sport out there, it has been since it started and it will never change.....

I have to disagree Puff, I tend to watch alot of college hockey and I won't miss olympic hockey. Neither has near the amount of contact that is allowed and (IMHO) encouraged in the NHL. There is a pure sport behind the blood sport and I for one would like to see the NHL take their lead from them.

Each level of hockey whether it be NHL, WHL,IHL, Olympic, so on has different rules to all aspects of the game. I love world cup and Olympic hockey as well , wonderful game. Ahhhh I am not a barbarian but i think the NHL is as pure as it gets...the passion involved is incredible and half of the problem,..the other half are the people at the top who only care about the money...they wont change the rules, cause sadly the fans that buy the tickets like the sport the way it is.They are making an example out of Bert so they can save a little face..perhaps they will call a few more penalties, a few more suspensions but thats it. I think each and every player in the NHL knows very well that they might get injured during the game, intentionally or otherwise...heck they ask for it!...its kinda like how race car drivers keep driving after a few drivers a year get killed or seriously injured..its part of the game and they know it...they love it so they play the game.
