Jeopardy Winner banks $828,960

Salt Lake City software engineer Ken Jennings Wednesday made it 26th straight Jeopardy victories with a $40,000 win to bring his total to $828,960.

When Jennings ran the Marvel comics category during the second round, host Alex Trebek asked: Have you done anything besides read comics?

It pays to be a nerd, Jennings responded.

Jennings topped graduate student Vanessa Osborne of Los Angeles and information securities analyst Michael Vance of Fishers, Ind., who won $300 and $16,399, respectively.

Jennings went into the final round with $34,000 and wagered $6,000 on the final Jeopardy answer: Born in 1564, he was employed by Elizabeth I's secretary of state to uncover Catholic plots against her reign.

Both Jennings and Vance supplied the correct question: Who was Christopher Marlowe?

Jennings has yet to crack the Jeopardy single day's winnings record of $52,000

Mention the name Jennings in the context of television and the ABC News anchor quickly comes to mind.

But there's another Jennings providing water-cooler commentary and climbing audience ratings.

So let's pretend I'm Alex Trebek asking a question in a "Big Money Winners" category on Jeopardy: "He's won the most money during the 40-year history of this thinking person's game show."

Answer: Who's Ken Jennings, a studious-looking, 30-year-old software salesman from Murray, Utah, who's gained national fame and fortune on Jeopardy (3:30 p.m. weekdays, Denver's 7)?

After Tuesday's performance when he demolished two more contestants, Jennings raised his win total to $788,960, the largest, by far, in Jeopardy's long history. (Anybody remember when Art Fleming was host when Jeopardy was a daytime staple on NBC?).

Although winning again Wednesday, Jennings, on Jeopardy for more than five weeks, has been toppled from his throne.

When did this happen?

Ah, those clever Jeopardy producers aren't telling. The half-hour installments are taped several weeks in advance of airing. So for obvious competitive reasons, King World, the series distributor, won't announce ahead of time the date of the show when Jennings is defeated.

This secret is guarded with the same intensity as was the time and place of the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

Not even the most noted investigative reporters have ferreted out the answer. And Jennings, like Survivor contestants, is sworn to secrecy by contract.

Jennings long ago surpassed the previous all-time winner, Tom Walsh of Washington, D.C., who won $184,900 during an 18-day run earlier this year.

Predictably, Jennings' success has spiked Jeopardy audience ratings across the country, where the syndicated series is broadcast in varying time periods.

In most TV markets Jeopardy, teamed with Wheel of Fortune, another popular King World game show also created by Merv Griffin, is aired in "access time periods" (between 6 and 8 p.m.) before network prime-time programming dominates the schedules.

Denver's 7 currently shows a 14 audience share for Jeopardy, compared with a 10 before Jennings began his binge of weekday victories. (A share is a percentage of households watching TV tuned into a particular program).

His domination has produced mixed, often passionate feelings from the series' devotees.

Some root for him; others want to see him lose.

Watching Jeopardy was part of my busman's holiday during a recent family and friends vacation on a North Carolina island.

We watched Jeopardy regularly in the early evening,

"He's a dweeb." . . . "Jennings is too cocky." . . . "It's bad for the show to have one guy winning all the time."

Those were some of the negative comments voiced.

"Hey, he adds competitive excitement to the show." . . . "It's like watching a major sporting event," others said.

Regardless of your opinion of Jennings' personality and style, few can argue about his amazing reservoir of knowledge on a variety of subjects.

One weakness?

Possibly sports.

While Jennings has answered some sports questions, he's remained silent in several categories, leaving the impression he could tell you what kind of fiddle Nero played while Rome burned but might be stumped about naming Michael Jordan's NBA team(s).

The conversational banter between Jennings and Trebek has reached the ridiculous stage. The host is running out of questions.

On Monday, Trebek did inject a bit of humor into his dialogue, noting that Jennings had been a Jeopardy contestant longer than William Henry Harrison had been a U.S. president.

The dour-looking Jennings occasionally flashes his humorous side.

When asked last week about how his winnings have affected his lifestyle, Jennings replied: "I'm beginning to appreciate President Bush's tax cuts."

His reference was to the ongoing debate about whether Bush's tax plans mostly benefit the rich.

And speaking of being rich, Jennings has been able to assemble his fortune because Jeopardy producers last year lifted the five-show limit for winning contestants.

Financial times have changed since Fleming introduced the game show to daytime NBC viewers in March, 1964.

The stimulating challenges rather than the financial stakes provided the early appeal.

A friend, a longtime fan of Jeopardy, recalls it was a big deal in those days when a contestant took home $200.

This really is incredible.  I watched him for 3 nights in a row while I was in Canada.  What was so funny was Alex trying to come up with new dialogue and questions for him during the introductions.    lol

Grin I really want to try joining a game show, but I just don't have the guts, even to go to the audition.

Cool $828,960 = 46,421,760 Philippine Peso (PhP). If I stash it away in a bag, and spend only 1000 PhP a day, I would have spent it all after 127 years! :laff:

Very Cool!  Grin

I used to watch this show faithfully for years. Wings would go nuts when he heard the theme music and love to whistle it.

Somehow, for some reason, I stopped watching.  But there has been so much publicity of late, I tuned back in.

I'm getting a real kick how cool this Ken Jennings is.  He hit over 1,000,000 yesterday - what a moment.

After, reading the news about the lottery winner, this pales in comparison. But still, $1 million is not very easy to get.  Wink

PALES?!!   Winning the lottery is sheer luck.  On Jeopardy, one has to have knowledge in many subjects to win even the smallest amount.  Ken is pushing on to two million as of last Friday.

:laff: I was shocked at that MsWings!

Of course it pales. $1 million of very hard work (hmmm like Survivor) compared to betting on a few numbers, shelling out a little money, and becoming a MULTI-millionaire the next weekend.  Grin

It's like you working for forty years to build your dream house, while this guy younger than you by 40 years drove in to the castle right beside your house, and you find out he got it from his parents.  Cheesy

$2 million? He hasn't been defeated yet?

Probably so, but their ratings have been down for some time and now look at all the press and watchers this stunt has gotten...

Dollarwise, 32 mil is soooo much more than 1 mil.  But I disagree with you on the basics.  Ken has studied and retained huge amounts of info (all his life).  Anyone can shell out some bucks to pay for a lottery tick.  But - not just everyone can win 1 mil on (or other game shows) Jeopardy.

That being said, I think this guy deserves kudos for his intellegence and efforts to go this far.   Intellegence isn't required to select lottery numbers.

Cool to the guy.

Isn't it unfair that some people need not be intelligent to be rich?  Undecided
