Laci Peterson + Lori Hacking Murders…updates

Has anyone noticed the strong similarities between the two current murder investigations for Laci Peterson and Lori Hacking? For one, both cases involve the husband as investigator’s primary suspects. Both Scott Peterson and Mark Hacking also have a history of lying to their spouses…with Scott admitting an affair with another woman (Amber Frey) and Mark having lied about his career and schooling for years.

With so much currently going on with both trials, (such as the judge in the Peterson case putting the trial on hold because of new found evidence, and the investigators in the Hacking murder digging a landfill each day looking for the body of Lori Hacking) I thought to start a discussion group here and see what everyone’s opinions are.

I also wanted to mentioned that Court TV just announced that Nancy Grace (I love this lady) will be keeping us updated on both trials through a live nightly broadcasts next week, at 8pm each night (Monday – Thursday). For those following either or both cases, this helps us stay one day ahead of what get printed in the newspapers. Perhaps we can use the topics she brings up as sources of discussion here as well.

I didn't realize they'd put the Peterson case on hold.  Do you have any more details about that?

If you go to Court Tv website there is a story on why judge delayed trial. Short version new evidence needs to be investigated by defense

Here is a portion of articel on Amber Frey and what was said in court..........
On Tuesday, the defendant's former mistress testified that her first date with Peterson included slow-dancing, champagne, and sex at a hotel room. But she says she didn't know he was married.

Peterson is accused of killing his pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Connor.

According to Frey, their relationship quickly went from a hotel-room tryst after their first blind date to something serious enough for her to trust him alone with her young daughter just two weeks later.

Prosecutors allege that Peterson's relationship with Amber Frey led him to murder his pregnant wife, Laci.

Frey, the government's star witness, testified Tuesday that Peterson did not wear a wedding ring and she didn't know he was married when they met on Nov. 20, 2002. He poured champagne in his hotel room, putting a strawberry in her glass, and they had sex later that night. The next morning, he left her with his cell number, not his home number.

My first thoughts are is this woman that DUMB She has sex on first date (blind date yet) instead of going to "his" place he takes her to a Hotel (warning sign!) He gives her his "Cell" number not his home (another warning sign) Certainly all the signs of "married man" were there and she couldnt see them!!! This in no way impliues she should have thought him a killer I was just surprised she was that dumb to not have no clue he had secrets!

I took this paragraph from Court TV regarding Peterson case:

  Chronic liar
Scott Peterson repeatedly deceived his family and friends after his wife vanished, according to taped phone calls played at his murder trial Wednesday

Yep.  The news today (Associated Press) said that after Laci's disappearance he called his parents from Berkley and told them he was in Fresno.  Now, why would someone lie to their parents about their whereabouts...unless he had something to hide?

I think the fact that Scott Peterson is a ruthless liar should be fully taken into account by the jury.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Prosecutors say Scott Peterson (news - web sites) was so worried his wife's body would surface in San Francisco Bay that he visited the area several times after reporting her disappearance. Defense lawyers say he was simply checking on the search efforts.

Prosecutors called numerous police witnesses Wednesday who tailed Peterson in the weeks after his pregnant wife Laci was reported missing on Dec. 24, 2002. They described how Peterson visited the Berkley Marina three times — on Jan. 5, Jan. 6 and Jan. 9 — as police scoured the bay for Laci's body.

On cross-examination of prosecution witness Jeff Mackanin, a state Department of Justice (news - web sites) investigator assigned to follow Peterson at times, defense lawyer Mark Geragos noted that Peterson also visited a reservoir miles away from the marina after learning from a newspaper article that police were considering a search for Laci there.

Mackanin said he had no knowledge of that. Geragos implied Peterson was simply going everywhere police were searching for his wife's body in hopes of finding some clues.

Police testified they followed Peterson's movements from Jan. 3-11 in 2003.

Alexander Bettis, an undercover officer with the Modesto Police Department, said that each morning Peterson would go to the volunteer center set up to help search for Laci and was often seen putting up missing fliers with her picture.

"I was trying to maintain surveillance. It was kind of a cat-and-mouse type thing," Bettis said, adding that at one point it appeared that Peterson knew he was being followed.

On cross-examination, Geragos highlighted the fact that Peterson began every day at the volunteer center and spent much time putting up fliers in search of his wife.

Earlier Wednesday, a search dog handler who provided key evidence against Scott Peterson acknowledged on cross-examination that her canine had failed a videotaped training exercise.

Eloise Anderson had testified that her dog, a Labrador named Trimble, picked up Laci's scent on Dec. 28, 2002, at a Berkeley Marina pylon at the water's edge.

Geragos played for jurors a video of the training exercise that Trimble failed.

He then criticized the search at the marina, noting that Anderson never performed a "missing member test," in which Scott Peterson would have been brought to the marina for the dog to smell before searching for Laci's scent.

Such an exercise, Geragos noted, could have helped rule out the possibility the dog was smelling Scott Peterson and not his wife.

Anderson said a missing member test was not necessary.

Prosecutors allege Peterson killed his wife in their Modesto home on or around that Christmas Eve, then drove to San Francisco Bay, launched his boat from the Berkeley Marina and dumped her body.

The remains of Laci and the couple's fetus washed ashore in April 2003, not far from where Peterson set out for what he claims was a solo fishing trip the day Laci vanished.

Defense lawyers contend someone else abducted and killed Laci, then framed their client after learning his widely publicized alibi.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Prosecutors on Tuesday sought to counter arguments by Scott Peterson (news - web sites)'s defense team that they were so eager to charge him with his wife's murder that other credible leads were ignored.

Reuters
 Slideshow: Laci Peterson Case

Two law enforcement investigators testified that in the weeks after Laci Peterson (news - web sites) vanished they pursued a tip that the pregnant schoolteacher was being held about 30 miles from her hometown.

Modesto police officer Eric Beffa testified about an anonymous tip received in early January 2003, weeks after the disappearance, that Peterson was being held captive near the suburb of Tracy.

Beffa quoted from a report: "They have a pregnant woman there and he states he recognizes her to be Laci. ... He doesn't want the reward money; he just wants her to be found."

He and a San Joaquin County sheriff's deputy, Paul Mears, testified that they and other law enforcement personnel responded to the area but were unable to find any sign of the woman, despite a four-day search.

Prosecutors allege Peterson killed his wife in their Modesto home on or around Dec. 24, 2002, then drove to San Francisco Bay and dumped her body. The remains of Laci Peterson and the couple's fetus washed ashore in April 2003, not far from where Peterson set out for what he claims was a solo fishing trip that Christmas Eve morning.

Defense lawyers contend someone else abducted and killed Laci, then framed their client after learning of his widely publicized alibi.

As the trial entered its 15th week, prosecutors also introduced evidence they say places Laci Peterson on the boat police allege Scott Peterson used to dispose of his wife's body.

A pair of pliers found on the boat contained a strand of hair that prosecutors claim is shown by DNA to have likely come from Laci Peterson.

It's their only piece of potential physical evidence linking Laci Peterson to the boat, which police say she never knew her husband had purchased. Defense lawyers, however, have said she probably knew about the boat.

Sarah Yoshida, a state criminalist, testified that she found no signs of blood or tissue on two pairs of Peterson's pliers that were seized by police.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - No blood was found on any of the tattered clothing from Laci Peterson (news - web sites)'s remains, a prosecution witness testified Tuesday at Scott Peterson (news - web sites)'s double-murder trial.

AP Photo

AP Photo
 Slideshow: Laci Peterson Case

Pin Kyo, a state Department of Justice (news - web sites) criminalist, said she scanned Laci Peterson's clothing for blood after her body was pulled from San Francisco Bay. Kyo previously testified that little blood was found in the Peterson home.

Prosecutors have not said how they believe Peterson killed his pregnant wife, and the body was too decomposed to determine a cause of death. Prosecutors are trying to prove Peterson killed his wife on or around Dec. 24, 2002, then dumped her weighted body into the bay.

The bodies of Laci Peterson and her fetus washed up along the bay in April 2003 not far from the Berkeley Marina, where Scott Peterson says he launched his boat that Christmas Eve morning for a solo fishing trip.

Kyo said she also tested twine-like material taken from around the fetus' neck. Showing a picture of the twine to jurors, prosecutor Dave Harris asked her about what appeared to be a small loop tied off with a knot.

"The way it's tied is very loosely," Kyo said.

Defense lawyers have claimed Laci was abducted, and that the child was born alive and then murdered. They have hinted that they believe the twine was intentionally tied around its neck.

Kyo also testified that the duct tape found on Laci's remains did not match duct tape discovered near where her body washed ashore, and that no tissue or blood was found on a large tarp-like piece of plastic found nearby.

Defense lawyers have implied the plastic and the duct tape may have had some connection to Laci's body.

On Monday, Kyo told jurors that she found no blood on two mops and a bucket seized from the Petersons' home. Prosecutors have implied Scott Peterson used the mops to clean the murder scene, but have presented no evidence to support that theory.

Kyo also testified no blood was found on several other items, including a blue tarp and Peterson's boat cover.

Kyo later said tiny specks of blood were found on the Petersons' comforter cover, but didn't elaborate. A source close to the case later told The Associated Press that DNA testing indicated the blood came from Scott Peterson.
