Jet crashes south of Moscow, another missing
More than 80 people aboard the 2 planes; no word on survivors

MOSCOW - Two Russian passenger planes with a total of more than 80 people on board went missing within minutes of each other late Tuesday and one was confirmed to have crashed, the Emergencies Ministry said.

A ministry spokeswoman said a three-engine TU-134 with 34 passengers and eight crew flying from Moscow to Volgograd crashed after contact with it was lost at 10:56 p.m. Moscow time (18:56 GMT).

The wreckage was found near the town of Tula some 90 miles south of Moscow. Witnesses saw an explosion on board the plane just before it crashed, Interfax news agency quoted local authorities as saying.

Just three minutes later, air traffic controllers lost contact with another passenger plane — a four-engine TU-154 with 44 passengers and eight crew on board — flying from Moscow to the Black Sea resort of Sochi, she said.

Contact was lost as the plane was flying near the southern city of Rostov-on-Don.

Initially, Itar-Tass news agency said that a TU-154 with 54 passengers and eight crew on board had crashed near Tula.

Tupolev’s Tu-154 jet remains the standard medium-range airliner on domestic flights in Russia, according to aviation Web sites. Some 157 feet in length, it can carry up to 180 passengers for up to 2,500 miles.

Terrorism possible?
NBC News Moscow bureau chief Tom Bonifield is reporting that there has not yet been  confirmation of a second crash.

Raising the possibility of a terrorist act, Bonifield reported that "the war in Chechnya has raised, off and on since 1994, a real problem for Russia."

“We've seen repeated attacks — including here in Moscow — that have been caused by Chechen rebels," Bonifield said, adding that Russian transportation officials “are fairly rigorous about protecting their aviation industry.”

NBC News' Tom Bonifield in Moscow, the Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

My mother-in-law is in Russia right now, scheduled to fly back on the 9th, coming out of Moscow.  I will be pretty nervous that day after this...

One of two Russian airliners that crashed nearly simultaneously was brought down by a terrorist act, officials said Friday, after finding traces of explosives in the plane's wreckage. A Web site connected to Islamic militants claimed the action was connected to Russia's fight against Chechen separatists. The planes, with 90 people aboard, went down within 20 minutes of each other Tuesday night. "According to preliminary information, at least one of the air crashes ... has been the result of a terrorist act," a spokesman for the Federal Security Service, Sergei Ignatchenko, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. How sad!  How can the fight against terrorism be won when  terrorists are all over the world?
