Mass. Gov. Office Gets Suspicious Letter 13 minutes ago Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo! By The Associated Press The number of governor's offices receiving suspicious letters grew to at least eight Friday, the day after one that had been rigged to ignite when opened prompted evacuations at the Montana Capitol. In Boston, Gov. Mitt Romney's office received a letter bearing a return address from the same maximum-security prison in Nevada that was the apparent source of the other letters. The governor's office, which had been alerted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, did not open the letter. Governor's offices in Montana, Texas, Idaho, Nebraska, Washington and Utah received the letters on Thursday. They were rigged with matches set to ignite when the letters were. New York Gov. George Pataki's office also received such a letter, which was intercepted during screening, a Pataki spokesman said. He did not specify which day the letter was received. There were no reports of injuries. All were postmarked from the Ely State Prison in Ely, Nev., officials said. Glen Whorton, assistant director for the Nevada Corrections Department, said two inmates whose names are on the envelopes were being questioned at the prison in eastern Nevada, and the FBI (news - web sites) is involved. Whorton, assistant director for the Nevada Corrections Department, said another letter also turned up at the office of the Nevada state corrections director. In Montana, two floors of the Capitol wing containing the governor's office were evacuated for about two hours Thursday. Sheryl Olson, deputy administrator of the state General Services Division in Helena, said the evacuation was ordered because police considered the incident a "credible threat." Eric Fehrnstrom, Romney's communications director, said the office is considering new policies to screen mail through magnetometers and to not open mail that does not have a return address. "We are constantly reminded of the fact that we live in a dangerous world," he said.
