CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Oprah Winfrey celebrated the premiere of her 19th season by surprising each of her 276 audience members with a new car.

"We're calling this our wildest dream season, because this year on the Oprah show, no dream is too wild, no surprise too impossible to pull off," Winfrey said on the show that aired Monday.

Winfrey said the audience members were chosen because their friends or family had written about their need for a new car. One woman's young son said she drove a car that "looks like she got into a gunfight"; another couple had almost 400,000 miles on their two vehicles.

Making sure the audience was kept in suspense, Winfrey opened the show by calling 11 people onto the stage. She gave each of them a car -- a Pontiac G6.

She then had gift boxes distributed to the rest of the audience and said one of the boxes contained keys to a 12th car. But when everyone opened the boxes, each had a set of keys.

"Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car!" Winfrey yelled as she jumped up and down on the stage.

The audience screamed, cried and hugged each other -- then followed Winfrey out to the parking lot of her Harpo Studios to see their Pontiacs, all decorated with giant red bows.

The cars, which retail for $28,000, were donated by Pontiac.

"A little idea grew into a big idea," Mary Henige of Pontiac told The Associated Press.

She added that Pontiac will pay for the taxes and the customizing of the cars.

In other segments on the show, taped Thursday, Winfrey surprised a 20-year-old girl who had spent years in foster care and homeless shelters with a four-year college scholarship, a makeover and $10,000 in clothes. And a family with eight foster children who were going to be kicked out of their house were given $130,000 to buy and repair the home.

"The Oprah Winfrey Show," which debuted in 1986, is syndicated to 212 domestic markets and 109 countries.

No wonder Oprah couldn't sleep! This was by far the greatest thing she's ever done, when it comes to giving away gifts. She made sure all the guests in the audience that day really needed a car. They had answered an online questionairre about cars, etc.!
She also gave a young woman a College Scholarship, 10,000 wardrobe and a new car.
.....and that's not all, she gave a family that cares for 8 foster children a check for $130,00 to purchase the house they live in for they were about to be evicted.

This woman does some good for people! Praises to Oprah Cool

To be honest it isnt Oprah who did this. Yes its her show but she didnt buy this cars they were donated by maker! If anyone deserves praise its Pontiac! Cool

I'm glad you clarified that about the people in the audience actually needing cars, Luci. When I first read this, I thought it was just a frivolous giveaway.

I agree but Oprah took credit yes I know she said Pontiac donated cars but she is smart she knows who would get praise. I say BRAVO Pontiac although my family of 7 have no car and we werent invited Cry

David, you guys don't have a car? Do you have good public transportation in your area? Unfortunately, where I live, one must have a car because our public transportation is very limited.

When I lived in Europe, I got by with just a bicycle. There was always a tram, a bus, a subway, a taxi, or a train to get me where I needed to go if my bike couldn't do the job.

Here, its abundant! Jeepneys, taxis, tricycles and tricikads(the last 2 for certain smaller areas)... problem is, its too dangerous these days - holduppers, and lot of... swindling. It not advisable for a foreigner or girls who arent used to it...

hehehe... welll... many of the jeepneys here have already gone too old that's why they became a bit crappy.... cars or any vehicles here lasts upto 20yrs to an owner or until it breaks down with poor maintenance or rust just ate them away... hehehe....

well... i'd say that its not that dangerous these days... specifically speaking of Manila (sweet is from Cebu)... there are pickpockets and some hold-up cases but they are limited too very crowded areas... its a matter of keeping your valuables near you always... Cheesy

anyways... boy I wish I can guest in her show... her sponsors does a lot of help to her guests.... and her and her show being the medium is great... and I think Oprah has something to with it in her own little way... Cheesy

It's call ADVERTISING folks.

All eyes are on Pontiac now. That's the point.

Oprah is a very smart lady. And throughout this season there will be tons of giveaways. She knows how to work it. I give kudos to her that she can do this for the masses and those who need it.
