Hurricane Jeanne May Head Back Toward U.S.

Wed Sep 22, 6:30 AM ET  Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

MIAMI - Deadly Hurricane Jeanne could head back toward the United States and threaten the storm-battered Southeast coast, including Florida, as early as this weekend, forecasters said Wednesday.

It was too soon to tell where or if Jeanne would hit, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (news - web sites) in Miami warned residents from Florida to Maryland to watch the storm with 90 mph top sustained winds.

Some computer models had Jeanne curving out to sea and missing land, but others had it hitting the United States on Saturday or Sunday, forecasters said.

Jeanne was blamed for more than 700 deaths in Haiti, where it hit over the weekend as a tropical storm and caused flooding. It had been moving out to sea, but it appeared to be looping back toward land, forecasters said.

At 5 a.m. EDT, Jeanne was centered about 525 miles east of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. It was moving south near 3 mph, but was expected to head west by early Thursday.

Dangerous surf and rip currents along with large swells are possible along the southeastern U.S. coast over the next few days, forecasters said. If Jeanne hit Florida, it would follow Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan, which caused billions of dollars of damage and more than 60 deaths across the state.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Karl weakened slightly and stayed on an open-ocean course that only threatened ships, while Tropical Storm Lisa moved slowly far out in the Atlantic.

Karl, the seventh hurricane this season, had top sustained winds near 115 mph, down from about 120 mph a day earlier. At 5 a.m., Karl was centered about 1,500 miles west-southwest of Fayal Island in the Western Azores and was moving north near 17 mph.

At 5 a.m., Lisa had top sustained winds near 65 mph, down from about 70 mph a day earlier. Forecasters said Lisa was a small storm and its wind speed was expected to fluctuate. The 12th named storm of the season was centered about 1,150 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands and was moving west-northwest near 7 mph.

The hurricane season ends Nov. 30.

My haitian friends.  I cry for them.  So much suffering and they have so little to prepare themselves and no one to run when the storms come.  I have been to Gonaives where the storm hit the worst.  I pray that they will get fresh drinking water and disease will not spread.

my prayers to all I have visited there especially the home for those with leprosy that I visited.

addams, here's some news of aid for Haiti.

Plea for help
Interim President Boniface Alexandre pleaded for urgent emergency help at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.

Several nations were sending aid, including $1.8 million from the European Union and $1 million and rescue supplies from Venezuela. The U.S. Embassy announced $60,000 in immediate relief aid Monday, drawing criticism from legislator Kendrick Meek, D-Fla., who called it “a drop in the bucket.”

Irigoyen said troops planned to oversee distribution of food and water on Wednesday. That could produce a riot among survivors, many of whom said they had not eaten since the storm.

A police officer in Gonaives said aid vehicles were having trouble getting into the city because people were mobbing them. One truck made it to the central City Hall, only to be attacked by people who squeezed inside and threw packets of water into the scrambling crowd.

60,000....
i guess america already has their funds tied up in situations that might benefit them more......

haiti... poorest country in western hemisphere, 3rd in the world...

as a result... people bolt from that country.... haitian refugees are a major "problem" in the caribbean.... Once in a country, they offer to work for pennies on the dollar.... sorta like our "latino migrant workers" in the US, specifically in the south...

as a result, the haitian refugees are persercuted in other countries in the caribbean..

the things people will do for a better life..

Haitians are generally treated poorly by much of the world.  They live in a very difficult environment.

Thank you for the update article on foreign aid.  I only pray that the government uses every penny for those affected and not to line their own pockets as has happened in the past.

There is only one road through Gonaives I believe and it was flooded last I heard.

Yes addams, it is flooded.  Now THIS just breaks my heart into pieces.

GONAIVES, Haiti (AP) -- U.N. peacekeepers fired into the air to keep a hungry crowd at bay Wednesday as aid workers handed out bread, the first food in days for some in this city devastated by floods that have killed more than 700 people in Haiti.

Displaced people cry as they wait to get water in Gonaives on Wednesday.

Thinking of everyone in the path of this next hurricane.  I pray that this will be the last for this season.  It has been too much already.

Hurricane season doesn't end till the end of November.  It seems to me that it used to be the end of October.  Anyone here know for a fact?  I don't know that I would remain in Florida, if we had retired there.  This is just too much.

The western gulf coast has been more or less protected by surprising cool fronts during the summer and early fall, that seem to be timed to redirect tropical weather.  As I said before, our good luck means bad luck for others.

As far as Haiti goes, we need to do more there.  They couldn't get away from the storm, and now can't get away from the misery, famine and thirst.  God help them.

Reuters Photo
350,000 Asked to Evacuate As Jeanne Nears
(AP) - Hurricane Jeanne trekked westward Friday on a path that could lead to Florida's east coast by Sunday, setting off another round of storm preparations in a state still reeling from three earlier strikes. Jeanne was already blamed for more than 1,100 deaths in Haiti, where it hit over the weekend as a tropical storm and caused major flooding. More than 350,000 people were asked to evacuate in three Florida counties hit hard by Frances on Sept. 5, and crews along the state's coast worked to remove debris still remaining after that storm, though some said it was a losing battle.
